Hey all, don't forget about Rick Newcombe this evening on the Virtual Pipe Club. He's speaking on some topics that should be of interest to any pipe smoker. We'd love to have you join... especially if you've never been before.
Since I'm presently working on an estate find meer, I decided to fire up the old Sultan. This was the first meer I ever attempted to rework. I don't pretend to know all I need to, pertaining to meerschaum, but this old pipe sure helped me learn a lot of what one can, and CANNOT do to a meer. All in all, the old guy turned out ok, IMHO. So I loaded up some Sutliff Sunset Rum and presently enjoying a break on this blustery day...
It seems a little cooler outside today🤔, so I’m partaking of the tobacco pipe inside this evening. It’s good to be the king!
Smoking some Sutliff “War Horse Green” in a Tilshead bent Dublin. Addendum: Not a fan of the War Horse Green 😖 Thanks for the sample @thebadgerpiper, now I know.
I decided to fill the Tilshead with some BCA to offset the nastiness of the prior bowl of War Horse Green. Earlier the Tilshead was smoking kinda wet too, so I chamfered the end of the tenon. I hope it will help🤞🏼
Smoking some Panama Jack “Key Lime” in a Peterson Dublin Edition B50. I really like this tobacco, alas, it has gone the way of the dodo 🙁. The drink of the evening is a Chai Tea Latte-made from scratch.
I bought this from Pipes & Cigars well over a year ago but was turned off by the pouch note. "Last Ride" is a cherry blend infused with that chemical cherry aroma associated with blends tasting of cherry cough syrup. I bought it while going through a period where I was searching for the ultimate cherry blend. And as with most cherry blends I wasn't too impressed. So I jarred it up and stored it on a back shelf along with several other failed cherry blend experiments. It's a portion of my cellar dedicated to blends I'm lukewarm about ... but willing to give them another chance later on down the line.
Well that time came yesterday and a good portion of today.
The pouch note is still the same - but thankfully it doesn't translate to the blend itself. I actually found the cherry flavor to be buried far enough back in the blend that it wasn't overpowering. And what little cherry I could detect was pleasant. Had I not smelled the jar before loading my pipe I'd never know it was a cherry blend.
The flavor is very enjoyable, not overly sweet, burns cool - easy on the tongue, and unlike most aromatics this one burns down to a perfect white ash with no goop on the bottom of the bowl. Normally I'm constantly running a pipe cleaner through the stem to soak up the excess moisture and quell any gurgling. But I never ran a pipe cleaner though it once the entire smoke. Now this could be because its been jarred for well over a year - but the jar was tightly sealed so it shouldn't alter the tobacco in any way.
So I've added another cherry blend to my regular rotation.
After two pipes of Captain Black classic in a Missouri Meerschaum Legend I'm sipping my way through a bowl of Brebbia Balkan. In my newish Meerschaum churchwarden.
It isn't as crazy as it sounds. The Captain Black was dessert and the Balkan was supposed to get me in the right frame of mind for a horror flick I haven't gotten around to watching.
Smoking this “Luciano“ high grade Brebbia I just spiffed up, loaded with Panama Jack “Melon”. This tobacco is tasty, but I can find no hint of melon flavor at all. The tin note has a very slight melon aroma. The “Key Lime” is way better. I have a tin of the “Pina Colada” also, as I recall it leaves much to be desired in either the coconut or pineapple flavors as well.
Just finished a bowl of Sutliff Black Vanilla in a very old Yellobole pot shaped pipe. WOW, very, very enjoyable. The tobacco was resting for just over 2 years in a Mason jar. I just added a note to order more when I next get to buy some tobacco.

I like that Savinelli 404 shape a lot.
It is a pretty thing! Smokes OK as well.
Using one to do some Lane LL7...

Your photos are a preview of things to come. Can't say I'm looking forward to it. The pipe is a beauty!

My look out the window this morning shows a landscape identical to yours. Drat!
When I ran across this photo, I immediately thought of you.
Wow, that’s a contrast.......

Wanted to see if it smokes differently... ... ... ... ... It doesn't. 😏
