I set the pipe mud in the Pete POY 2020 and smoked half a bowl of the Sutliff “Barbados Plantation” (still not a fan), and half a bowl of the Panama Jack “Key Lime”.
@RockyMountainBriar How long do you allow your pipe mud to set up before firing up? Personally, I have found a minimum of 4 days to a week depending on the amount of mud needed to be used. But that's just me, how about you...
@KA9FFJ I usually let pipe mud set until it is light gray and hard. This time I felt like just going for it. I made a fairly heavy paste and only applied it in the heel, not anywhere on a side. I then added a few drops of Everclear to the heel and touched it off. I did that a few times to dry it out and then I set it with a torch lighter. I need to be super careful doing that, one wrong move and the rim on a 2020 POY Natural would have been toast. I live on the edge I loaded 1/2 bowl with the Barbados Plantation that I had dried down (it's still too moist by the way, it just won't dry down < 12%). All of the Sutliff tinned tobaccos I have seem like they have PG galore? After smoking the BP, the heel/mud was looking good, so I went for the second 1/2 bowl of Key Lime. The pipe mud in the heel was still pretty dry after that smoke too. Now I will let it set until the mud dries hard.
@motie2 Oh, I didn't smoke them in the same bowl. I smoked 1/2 bowl of the BP, then I loaded 1/2 bowl of Key Lime and smoked it. I'm kinda partial to Mojito's, they use lime
It may be just me, but I have always had not so pleasant experiences with my tobacco immediately after mudding. I find it tends to muddle (no pun intended) the taste and I find it usually takes 2 or 3 bowls before the tobacco starts tasting like it should. But once that point is reached, tobacco tastes seem to go back to normal. Just a personal obversation for what it's worth...
@KA9FFJ You know, it’s funny. I was thinking the same thing about the pipe-mud affecting (I think I have the correct one, I’m not an English major by any stretch of the imagination) the first few smokes in the pipes I have worked over in the past when I let the mud dry solid. This time the mud was still a bit moist and I was waiting for an “off” flavor but I did not notice any at all through either half-bowl🤔. I have either lost my taste buds, the Sutliff tobacco was so bad I didn’t notice and the Key Lime was not affected (again, not sure of correct word) or it just was not there. Maybe “treating” it with the Everclear and burning it off a few times got rid of any “off” flavors before the smoke?
Smoking the little Briar Bird Dublin with some Vauen No. 9 “Himalayan Blend”. Pretty tasty, but it’s not wanting to stay lit. I probably should have let it dry a touch. Finally got it going 👍🏻
Smoked my first bowl of W.O. Larsen's Indigo yesterday. It was a pleasant smoke but I'm going to have to smoke more of it to get a better sense of its flavor and aroma. First bowl was in a meerschaum.
Half and Half in a Dr Grabow Grand Duke billiard. The first time I tried Half and Half back in the 70's it bit me like a rattle snake. Either the tobacco has gotten better or I've learned a little about smoking a pipe.

What are your impressions of the Double Pressed Latakia? I've thought about ordering some but it's a bit pricey.
