Thank you for the warm welcome. I live west of Portland in Oregon. I have simple tastes in pipe tobacco. I buy mostly lane 1Q, BCA, and BLWB and mix according to my mood. I was a Dunhill fan, but those days are gone due to a lack of local supply. I look forward to expanding my knowledge of what others enjoy as I explore this site.
Astoria and the coast is still a wonderful place to visit. Portland has its ups and downs but is still nice. This area has many fine tobacco shops, but lacks a "Pipe Community". I am always seeking others who enjoy puffing.
I lived and worked (commercial fishing) in Astoria Oregon for a year or so back in 1982 after my stint in uncle Sam's canoe club, ended up moving to the Seattle area due to the collapse of the Oregon fishery.
Absolutely loved living there and the Elk and deer hunting back in Young's Bay was incredible. But I digress.
Enjoy the forum, great guys and a huge wealth of knowledge here; one only need ask.
Thank you Mapltop. I moved to Oregon in the mid 90's after 10 years in the 2nd fleet tin can command. It is nice to make your acquaintance. Do you have a good pipe community where you are now?
Interesting story but too long, suffice to say that I eventually ended up back in the Chicago area, mostly for economic reasons and that worked out well.
As far as pipe community it's pretty good, as luck would have it the Chicago Pipe Collectors Club meets at a shop about 2 miles from home (which in in the western suburbs) and they are a great group of guys and gals.
So if you don't mind my asking, Portland is as I recall roughly 90 miles west of the coast, so are you near the river somewhere in between?
Welcome....Tin Cans huh? I was on Minesweepers. Fun times often interrupted by not so fun times, but I would not have missed it for the world, I think the military often makes us who we are.
Enjoy your time here, lots and lots of great people and an absolute wealth of knowledge and information.
@PappyJoe I was indeed using that term of endearment in reference to the surface warfare arm of the US Navy.
@pwkarch I absolutely agree about the affect being in the military has on those that serve and lately have been thinking what a benefit to American culture it would be if all the youth these days were to do a couple of years of service.
We all ALL brothers, regardless of what branch we chose to serve......my attitude is we can all rib each other, but no one who has not served can do the same. We all have respect for all the military branches.
I am enjoying the discussion. I appreciate the oppertunities for learning and training I received in the Navy. I would encourage any young man to start his life journey in the service of this great country and... to give a pipe a try.
Hey everybody. I just joined this evening. Still figuring out how this forum works, so I hope I’m commenting right. Looking forward to reading up and delving deeper into this new found hobby/stress relief.
Hi jfreedy, Thank you for the welcome. I am Dan. I have cousins, but I don't think we are related other than a love of the pipe and an enthusiasm for life.
Great place you have here! I've enjoyed pipe smoking for about a year. I prefer latakia, dark-fired Kentucky, orientals, and Perique blends, which I smoke in a few inexpensive, fixer-upper pipes I rescued.
Looking forward learning more from you fine folks!
@Danfriedman I’ve always had a fascination with pipe smoking and loved the smell of pipe tobacco. I’ve got a lot of English, Scottish, Irish, and Danish blood in me so I guess that’s why lol. I’ve been a cop for almost 7 years, my wife had a brain aneurism after 6 months of marriage, and now that she is ok we are having to move my grandmother into our basement to care for her.... all these stresses combined I decided I needed a stress relief.... I don’t think I could have found a better one to be quite honest. Been doing it for a year and love every aspect of it. There is just something very calming about the whole process. Hope that wasn’t too much info lol. But there it is. Looking forward to speaking more with everybody I meet on here and finding some like minded friends with the same hobby as me.
@Michael308 Although I am new to the forum, I can tell you that from my experience, you have friends here that understand many of the things you are going through and are here for you.
Greetings to @TroutWhisperer@Michael308 and @Danfriedman this is a excellent forum with a really great bunch of mirthful guys who possess a serious wealth of knowledge, all at no charge.
@Praider8 Thank you. I have been enjoying many of the older discussions. I love the way people are so willing to be supportive with an edge. It is a real service.
