@xDutchx Back in the mid 90's I went to a concert in Charleston, SC and saw 7M3 there. Got them to sign the inside of my jacket. The only thing I had at the time to get signed. About a year later my stepmom cleaned out my drawer of clothes I couldn't fit anymore. And out to the landfill it went!
There is a pretty good This Pipe Life playlist on Spotify if anyone is interested. It was created by Spotify user xeburnout last year. Ten hours worth of music.
Like so many others, I crave bluegrass (and newgrass) and folk with my pipe. The Show Ponies station on Pandora is my happy place while I’m doing some woodworking, smoking my pipe, and watching my girls play in the backyard. ... man I gotta get home... but lately I have been binge listening to Country Squire Radio while I smoke
Not music, but an appreciation of Thelonious Monk, from the blog at Smokingpipes.com.
<< It's Never Too Late --- by Daniel Bumgardner, February 22, 2018
The album's art had faded to something like a pastel teal, a far cry from the vibrant aquamarine it once possessed. Still, Thelonious Monk's face maintained a look of calm repose, the light framing his profile as if he was deep in thought. I slid the vinyl from its cover, and soon the first few notes of "Monk’s Dream" filled the room, subsequently joined by Charlie Rouse on the tenor sax, just in time to apply a flame to the bowl.
Thelonious Monk was a pipe smoker, and whether he realized how well this album pairs with a morning or late evening pipe, I'll never know. It's probably not my favorite record from him, but listening to it while smoking, it's the perfect litmus test by which to judge cadence, which adds another layer of interest to the experience. I also know that if I'm halfway through the bowl, as soon as Frankie Dunlop starts working those hats toward the end of "Five Spot Blues," I'm doing alright.
When "Bolivar Blues" starts, I'll set the pipe down. I learned the hard way that Charlie's sax performance needs my full attention. By the time the song is in full swing, I'll pick it back up, and when I hear that sax melody come back, I know it's safe for a relight.
I once heard that Monk recorded the entirety of "Monk's Dream" with a piano on wheels, placed at the top of a gently raked hill. The recording would begin and they would release the instrument, with Monk chasing in tow, his fingers on the keys. Even if this anecdote isn't true, I believe it, as even the album's most solemn moments have a feeling of electric urgency. It makes the air feel practically effervescent, like the sense that anything can happen.
Despite all appearances to the contrary, I would not consider myself a fan of jazz as much as a student of music. Perhaps this has something to do with the perceived notion of the need to possess an acute knowledge of the genre in order to call oneself a fan, and mine pales in comparison to some in this very office. But maybe I should. After all, like the first blend that truly "opened up" for me, "Monk's Dream," is an old favorite, and it didn't take long after that first enjoyable smoke for me to consider myself a pipe smoker.
Still, it calls to mind something I once overheard, as applicable to the brilliant pianist's work as it is to our hobby:
"The great thing about life is, no matter how long it's taken you to come to someone like Monk, your days thereafter can only get better.">>
I don’t know if any of you enjoy worship and gospel music, but here is a bunch of my Uncle Paul’s music. He and my Aunt Margie traveled and spread the good Word wherever they went. I’m so honored and privileged to have been his nephew.
Wow! I posted at the beginning of this thread and since then there have been 26 post pages full of great music. We are all over the spectrum. Thought I'd add one more to those jazz lovers out there. My wife and I have begun to enjoy the series Granchester (set in a mythical English parish during the 50's). The parish priest loves to ruminate in his study with cigarettes, scotch and a litttle Sidney Bechet. Bechet has become my new favorite jazz to listen to in the garage while I enjoy Dunhill The Apertif in the early evening.
