It depends on my mood. I have an hour commute to and from work. It makes for great pipe smoking but my music interests vary greatly. Most of the time, I play a classic rock station on the radio. Other times I'll play Jazz or classical. Mingo Fishtrap is a great jazz, soul fusion group that I enjoy immensely. Bach is my go to classical music.
@motie2. I've always been drawn to Bach. I seem to enjoy his dark compositions for some reason. It seems he composed the "grunge" music of his era. If you get a chance, peruse YouTube for Mingo Fishtrap if you like Jazz, soul, rock fusion.
My wife is a non-smoker, yet she has no problem with my smoking a pipe in the house. On the other hand, she absolutely hates the music of Bach. She would likely shoot me on the spot if I, in her presence, tried to listen to the Brandenburg Concertos.
Back in the 70s some of the grocery stores would do promotions where you could get classical music LPs for like 99¢ with each $10 purchase. I had a collection of at least 10 different albums - Bach, Beethoven, Brahms, Chopin, Handel, Tschaikovsky, Lizt, Rachmanioff and a couple of others.
All good music to listen to while pipe smoking and reading.
I've completely given up on the radio and always bring a batch of CDs with me whenever I travel. Even the classic rock stations seem to have a list of a little more than one hundred or so song that they continue to cycle over and over. I long for the days of FM radio when a station played the deep cuts in an album as well as the band's big hit. Genesis, Yes, The Moody Blues, Kansas, Styx, Pink Floyd and all those other progrock, heavy metal, arena rock, and classic rock and rollers sold millions of records (some double albums) during the 70s' & 80s', yet the stations only play a half dozen - at best - greatest hits from the bands. If the station is playing a Zeppelin song it's usually "Stairway To Heaven". I though satellite radio might be different - but they tend to do exactly the same thing. And sadly those 60s' stations are guilty of the same thing. I lived in that era and know there were a Hell of a lot more tunes than the ones they continue to play over and over. The thing that really worries me is the newer car don't seem to have a CD player in them anymore, so I guess I'm going to have to keep the car I have until I die considering I have about 2000 CDs in my collection.
@ghostsofpompeii - I subscribed to Sirius XM Radio two years ago and quickly learned that it was really the same as FM radio stations. Hour long pre-set shows that they just keep repeating over and over again.
I interned at a FM and AM radio stations back in 1975 in Seattle. The FM radio programming was provided on 18 inch tapes with built in stops to signal the other machine to play pre-recorded commercials and announcements. The 3 minute segments for news were also pre-recorded and inserted automatically.
The AM station had live on-air personalities and did the news live but all the music was on tape cartridges. The control boards I was familiar with had slots for 10 or 12 cartridges at a time.
My town Maywood, NJ had a "Teen Canteen" the town gave us a Rockola" Jukebox with current records and a Coke machine both for free. We had the use of the Middle School Cafeteria Wednesday night for 7th to 9th grade and Friday night for 10th to 12th grades. The Canteen committee consisted of High School Volunteers and 3 adult advisers who helped us to set up and break down including cleanup. The Committee ran the show and our advisers would leave us till closing. We never had a drunk or doped kid get in and we all had good times. I served on the committee for 3 years. no smoking inside and it was limited to kids from the 2 towns that attended the high schools. We had an Auxilliuary Police walking around once in a while, he never had to help us out.
Will often listen to Hank Williams, Dolly, The Cranberries or any type of mainstream that I like. Which is rare, but there are some good artists out there.
I do however break into my extensive collection of Punk Rock such as Social Distortion, The Germs, T.S.O.L., Decendents, Posh Boy collections, HUGE Sublime fan!
I grew up listening to 70's-90's country with my Momma before the beast called cancer took her from me. So I have a soft spot for all country of that time frame and always will. Especially Garth Brooks whom was my Momma's favorite. https://youtu.be/149XR6htQwU
