We smoke aged (cellared 5 yrs!) Lane 1Q. Was it worth the wait?
Published on Jul 26, 2017
It was exactly five years ago that Homer put-up five pounds of Lane 1Q into Mason jars and stuck them in the corner of a dark closet. Today we crack open two jars to see how they aged.
@motie2- interesting video. Virtually no difference between jars so a supper tight or vacuum seal is not required. Found the same to be true with cellaring of Dunhill's Early Morning Pipe blend. I opened a 3 year old jar and found the contents to be about the same as the day I filled the jar. If there were any flavor changes, they were negligible.
A lot of aromatics use burley to cool the smoke, but burley doesn't age much. Try cellaring aromatics that are Virginia (or straight Virginia) dominant.
I aged 1/2 lb. of Sweet Vanilla Honeydew for about 5 years and it was superb when I went back to it.
As long as it maintains the flavor I don't care if it ages well and changes for the better - so long as it doesn't lose it's flavor and change for the worse.
A question: Ingnoring the presentation (flake vs. mixture) is there a component difference between the two? I enjoy the Erinmore mixture, but don’t care for the flake.
BTW, what’s your take on the flavoring (Topping? Casing? Whatever?) And is the thing pictured on the tin a thistle or a pineapple?
@motie2 The pineapple on the label is an old-time symbol for hospitality. Despite its appearance on the tin, the top-dressing contains no pineapple flavor.
Anyone know of a spruce topped tobacco? I spent a summer in Alaska and spruce tips are a big thing there. It makes excellent beer flavor. Seems like it would make a great Christmas blend.
Any JM Boswell aro blend is phenomenal in my opinion. Their English blends are outstanding too. I got to meet Mr. Boswell this summer. His pipes smoke outstanding and he was a gracious host in his Alexandria store. Well worth the stop is you are in Pa. He has an outstanding staff that is very knowledgeable as well.
RQV is not an aromatic it is a Va/Per. The aro's I make are Morning on the Pizer, Evening on the Pizer, Autumn on the Pizer, Holiday Blend and Berry Morning. Dix is a Va/Bur and I do a limited release of a full English called Don't Lick The Third Rail. There are some rarer blends I did in the past that are floating around such Red Queen VI which is a Va/Per/Or and Charlie the Unicorn that is a straight Virginia.

Perhaps you might describe your aros. If you are as good at aros as you have been with Dix, Whiskey Dix, and Red Queen V, I might be interested in purchasing some to try.
The joke that became the legend. I used Dix Tobacco as a joke to derail various topics on a piper’s forum. Well one piper convinced me to make the blend and it turned out really good.

@AceFour Thanks for the “pizer” information/explanation. I was thinking it was a river maybe. Normally I would look for the capitalization of a proper noun, but it’s not really a “thing” anymore. With the age of computer geeks that couldn’t/can’t type or are/were too lazy to bang the shift key, the age of capitalization of proper nouns and the like is going the way of the dodo.
https://www.milantobacco.com/milanpipetobacco.htm Presents a long list of aromatics; some are original, some are match blends, and some appear to be familiar from other sources…… (I’m looking at you, Sunset Rum.)
About to embark on an exploration of Boswell aromatics, especially Boswell's Best, Piper's Pleasure, and Rum River. I've heard/read good things about their blends. Anyone have any experience/opinions/advice regarding Boswell aros?

BP being my main aro, I was pleased to discover this by ordering some of the QAR.
Not spruce but cedar.
See if you can get your hands on The Untouchables Special Mixture. It's my new favorite blend and I smoked some this weekend around my fire pit.
Check out my blog for my review.
