After reading the SPC blog today, I decided to load up my Charatan’s Make Executive Extra Large. I loaded it full with a mix of CB Cherry and C&D Espresso….it took 10 grams of tobacco 😳. I’m thinking this will smoke awhile. From what I have read about Charatan’s, the stamping on this one dates it to 1964, my birth year. I might have added too much CB Cherry to the mix.🤔
Well, still smoking the Charatan. I smoked it for 3 hours straight with no relights. Then let it go out to part take in dinner. Re-lit and back at it for another 1/2 hour so far, with more to go….still smoking. It’s a handful, not exactly a clencher, but it is not impossible🙂
@RockyMountainBriar Holy crap dude, 5 hours!! I have a charatan too. It's a deep bowl but not as wide as yours. I have not timed it but I'm sure it's over an hour.
I just came in from gathering the last eggs to include in this incubator batch and it's still damn cold! Warming up with a fresh cup of coffee and GH Balkan Mixture in a Rob Roy.
@Londy3 Yep, it’s a big ass pipe. I actually did weigh out 10 grams of tobacco for it, just to see how much it held…..so 5 pipes to a tin. When I actually decided to dump the dottle, I was surprised…it was nearly all smoked down. It might have smoked another 10-15 minutes if I had worked at it. I must be a pretty slow smoker, because I usually get 45-60 minutes out of my small bowls, normal? Group 4-5 bowls 90-120 minutes, the big autographs and bigger Pete’s over 2 hours…..now, if I could just learn how to pack and tamp to keep the relights lower. On a positive note, I only had about 5 relights on that Charatan….not including the after dinner relight. The others were all after that point, the first 3/5’s smoked with just a few tamps.
It was in the 60's today and I was able to smoke outside. The pipe shown is a bin pipe that went through the washing machine in a pair of coveralls about 25 years ago. It is a great smoking pipe. I mixed some Sugar Barrel and some Cornell & Diehl Irish Blessing in equal amounts. It isn't great, but not too bad. It does last a long time.
I'm smoking another one of the Sutliff Private Stock blends I recently discovered in the back shelf of my cellar ... this one is called "St. George's Blend". Another fine aromatic ... taste and smells great, as well as burns to a nice white ash without dottle at the bottom of the bowl. The pipe I smoked was my pear wood Dragon Claw. The pipe has a nice deep bowl and I can usually get a 30 minute or more smoke out of it. Picked this one to pair with the movie I was watching ... "Charlie Chan And The Curse Of The Dragon Lady". I bought the DVD at a resale shop today for 50 cents - and even at that low price I overpaid. Thought it might be a modern take of like the old Charlie Chan movies but it was one of those screwball comedies in the vein of "Airplane". More of a parody. Peter Ustinov did a nice job as Chan, and if they cast him again in a straight mystery instead of a goofy as Hell comedy it might work. Seems like the filmmakers were going for a Peter Seller's type Pink Panther comedy - but they failed miserably. At least the pipe was good.
@PappyJoe; I've made a bunch of them. I have them in the house and in my smoking shed. When you scatter them around it makes it harder to tell just how much of the Irish I drink.

All nice looking pipes, Brothers.
Do you ever loan out books? Just asking!

5 hours? That is a amazing. The only thing I can do for 5 hours is sleep in my recliner.
Have you ever thought of using that pipe as a secondary source for trash burning... 😏
That thing is HUGE...
George Washington in my large Cutty.
I am now saving the corks out of my whiskey and rum bottles to make a pipe stand like that.

Or maybe, if your wife drinks wine, you can attribute some to her😬
She does, but she will never be able to keep up with the demand. Plus it is a different kind of cork.
Doing some Sutliff Dulce de Leche in a little CAO latticed meer...
