@Balisong, I haven’t smoked the Peterson version, but according to @Leonard (moderator at TPL and works for STG) it is the exact same as the Dunhill-branded versions. STG manufactured the Dunhill blends AND manufactures the new Peterson blends. I have no reason not to believe them. So I’m sure you’re tasting the age or lack there of on each blend. I need to try the new Peterson version. I sure hope it’s the same!
Turning nippy here (St. Louis area), so I just completed my fall insect spraying around the house. After washing my hands thoroughly, I've loaded up some Frankenblend in a reworked Archway...
@jfreedy There are also year to year crop variations that can effect flavor. One of my Virginia Flake favorites is Dan Hamborger Veermaster. There are so many good flakes available it's hard to choose just one!
Smoking some C&D Virginia Flake in a Ser Jacopo Delecta L1. The Cumberland and brass tamper is also by Ser Jacopo. I just looked at the stamping on the right side of the shank, it is stamped “PER ASPERA AD ASTRA” anyone know what that translates to (without a computer to translate🙂)? Drinking a double shot Ethiopian bean espresso with steamed whole milk, about a 50/50 mix.
Its not that often that I have a few long minutes to enjoy a nice relaxing smoke these days, but everyone is in bed, the house is cleaned, quiet and buttoned up for the night so I'm breaking open the peretti 150th. In an old Mastercraft that I worked over. Lost the M.C. logo so I replaced it with a blank silver inlay. Sometimes being the last guy to sleep has it's benefits.
Ad Astra Per Aspera is a popular Latin phrase for To The Stars Through Hardships. It has origins with Virgil, who wrote sic itur ad astra meaning Thus One Journeys To The Stars & opta ardua pennis astra sequi - Desire To Pursue The High Stars On Wings.
Smoking some Sutliff “Barbados Plantation” in an old LHS PUREX Superfine #37. The tobak is finally smoking well, now that it is dry enough, and it is tasty with a pleasant room note as well. I just took a quick at LHS on Pipedia and according to the information provided there, if the pipe is marked Real Briar Root, it is a pre-WWII Pipe...which this one is👍🏻 It is even older than I though. I have another like it, just a bit different stain color. I don’t recall if I stained one or both when I refurbished them years ago?
First chance I have had to get on this site since Wednesday. Yesterday I had H&H Virginia Spice in a smallish Barisinni Briar which did nothing for me. A mellower experience in the second half of the bowl, but the entire bowl was absent any real spice notes? However I have to add i was never a straight Virginia Tobacco fan to be fair.
Last evening I had a bowl of Russ's Chocolate Covered Espresso Bean in a small Kaywoodie Briar. Unlike my previous CCEB experience (in a larger pipe) there was a lot of tongue and mouth bite. I could not detect any discernable flavors other than just a "sweet note". Truth be known, this was on the screen porch and was a bit breazy which may have contributed to my slight negativity.
I was also in a bad and depressed mood thinking a pipe or two would cheer me up yesterday. So being a believer in pipe smoking is tuned in to the total experience including mood and mindset, this may have had some influence in both experiences. Point being I am not writing off either tobacco or either pipes.
Does anyone agree that a down mindset or attitude can influence a pipe (or even cigar) smoking experience.
I agree that mindset can sometimes interfere with tobacco enjoyment. On the other hand, a favorite pipe loaded up with a favorite tobacco in a peaceful environment can improve mental wellbeing. I'll just imagine all my cares cares dissipating with each wisp of smoke.

I thought you might have a good chance at that one. I had to look it up, as is said, you learn something new everyday
