Trying some C&D Oak Alley from their cellar series while my girls play at the park. I’m not sure if it’s the burly or what, but I’m not enjoying it as much as I did on the first bowl. It’s very woody and earthy, almost like an English blend without Latakia. Some of the reviews say that it is sweet and the Virginia‘s are more forward, but I’m just not getting that today. Has anyone else tried this one?
@ChaplainCorey I have tried the C&D Oak Alley when I first opened the tin and repacked it into a mason jar for my “cellar”. It was awhile ago so I don’t remember specifics, but I know I liked it🙂. It has now been aging since 6/15/2015, it should be even better now👌🏻
@ChaplainCorey You convinced me to break out the Oak Alley and fire some up in my Pete System #31🙂. This smoking inside is getting to be a habit...still a bit chilly outside, even in the garage. The smoke is a bit sweet, not aromatic sweet, but Virginia sweet. The Perique keeps it spicy and adds a little more dark fruit sweetness, a little sour. The Oriental adds a bit of floral?, a different kind of spice? I think the Burley is taking front stage though. This is a small bowl pipe, there is definitely some vitamin-N. It is not overpowering, but medium anyway, glad I just ate. Nice and dry, no bite. Nice retrohale. This bowl is getting sweeter. I think there was still a bit of Latakia ghost in this pipe that was skewing the flavor to begin with, making it “soapy”...not a positive for me😖. Much nicer smoke as I burn through this bowl and the Latakia ghost dissipates. I had to relight a few times. I may have underestimated the swell from the crumble cake and packed it bit tightly. This straight system pipe is deceiving to pack anyway.....kind of like “short sheeting” since the bowl has a well beneath it, it looks like it should hold more tobacco. Still a good 45 minute smoke....ash at the bottom.
Did some training this afternoon with a new operator which allowed me to get a couple of bowls in of Black Frigate and a new home blend of 50% C&D Midnight Drive and 50% of my English Franken blend which was actually very good.
The Midnight Drive have too much perique for me by it self.
@Londy3 Lookin' good brother... Going to the St. Louis Pipe Show next Saturday. Leonard from Lane will be there with jars and jars of tobacco. I have been wanting to try LL7 but have never got around to acquiring the blend. Consequently I will be getting some there and I look forward to giving it a whirl... Thanks for reminding me...
Thanks @RockyMountainBriar for the comments. I am definitely going to revisit it again. I will try to keep some of those tasting notes in mind when I do so. Thanks for posting the review. My tin has about a year of age on it, so I’m sure it will continue to get better over the years.
@thebadgerpiper I have been wanting to try some of the War Horse Tobacco's, just haven't got around to it. There are soooo many others I want to try first
Carter Hall in a Morgan Bones Sitting Barrel. I really like the size of this pipe. Not too heavy, so you can clinch it easily while doing sometime, but big enough for a decent length of smoke.
I am continuing my quest to smoke up the tobacco in some of my small jars. Since Dec. 31st, I have finished off 7 jars. I'm currently working on a jar of CAO Moontrance and the last few bowls of some Gatlin-burlier Cade's Cove. I also have about a half oz. of G.L. Pease Stratford.
My grandfather owned and ran a tobacco farm in Cadiz, KY. He was born February 13, 1887. I spent many a summer as a kid helping work the tobacco and occasionly putting them up in semi-open barns for curing. Knowing I will not be able to enjoy a bowl in his honor tomorrow, I am doing so today. Loaded up some Half & Half into an Abb Brown ( @Corey562 ) artisan pipe. The pic is my grandpa (Jesse) when he was 13...
As a child my grand farther had a summer place just outside Edgerton Wisconsin close to a lake and they grew tobacco on many of the farms in the surrounding area.
I used to watch them plant the plants on tow behind wagons with 4 or 6 people sitting in seats just above the ground putting seedling directly in the prepared furrows.
Every field had one or two drying structures, interestingly I did not find out till I was older that the tobacco they grew was for chewing.
I remember all the fun we had if we were up in the town during tobacco days celebration.
They still grow some in the area but very little compared to the 60's
@PappyJoe I have some CAO Moontrance, and I like it, but I bought it expecting it to taste like the cigar. The pipe tobacco is sadly missing the coconut aroma/flavor of the cigar🙁, which is what I like most about the cigars.

Well done Mr. Morgan.
