@RockyMountainBriar I saw that. It's a shame they were a limited run it's a hell of an attractive pipe. A good runner up for me would be the Peterson Belgique. It's pretty unique for Peterson shapes. I tend to gravitate to the smaller bowl shapes since I never seem to have time for a good long smoke.
@Zouave I have two of the Peterson “Calabash” shapes and a Belgique. One of the calabash pipes was one of the first ten or so pipes I purchased. It was also the first pipe that a hole burned through the front (on the very first smoke). It’s amazing how quickly it happened. I sent it back to Peterson for warranty and they sent me a new one, the one I have now…no problems with it. The other Calabash and Belgique ate both SPC special runs in Natural finishes. The Belgique has a sterling band. I want to send the Calabash to Peterson and have them make a Sterling Silver band for it too.
As a note, if you have not seen the Calabash and Belgique pipes in person, they are tiny even for me, and I like smaller pipes…..actually, who am I kidding, I like all kinds of tobacco pipes.
@RockyMountainBriar I would not have guessed the calabash pipes would be small. The belgigue looks like a decent size for me, half the time I only get through half a bowl before I have to run off and do something else. As for finding a pipe I don't like....doesn't happen often but I have never been a fan of pocket pipes.
@Zouave I might be able to get my pinkie in the bowls, then maybe to the middle of it just past the joint.
I can post a pic for size comparison. Do you have a “common” pipe that I may have in my inventory, another Peterson or Savinelli maybe? That way, you could get a visual reference for comparison if you like.
Since I had the cabinet open I pulled out the “Barrel” and “Tankard” (which is not the Mark Twain Large Tankard/D19, the Mark Twain is larger). The “Barrel” and “Tankard” are a little larger than the “Calabash” and “ Belgique”. The other dark “Calabash” was one of my first ten pipes. They are displayed with the same 03 “Royal Irish”.
@RockyMountainBriar thanks for the comparison. Im glad you showed them side by side, they are considerably smaller than what one would expect, especially the calabash. That Royal Irish has some nice grain on it!
I think this is actually a pretty cool pipe...wonder if it has a hardwood plug...I think a yellow stamp on the bottom means it does, which this one has.
@Zouave Did you read the article the second link was for? This guy's hero was William Bragge, a 19th century pipe collector, who had 7,000 pipes. I don't even have a tenth of one percent of that guys pipes.
@RockyMountainBriar One of us must be using new math. I was thinking it was 70 pipes but your are right. I have less than one percent of his 7,000 pipes. I think I have around 60.

Yep, I have a couple of 03’s. I will drag the little guys out for a show and tell comparison for you.🙂
Here we go.
The top is an 03 “Royal Irish”. I can just fit my pinkie into the bowls on the “Calabash” and “Belgique”.

I said it before and I'll say it again, I'm not buying anymore pipes and you can't make me!

Not my cup of tea, but I appreciate the craft skills that went into them.

If the bowl came from an MM Morgan it has a hardwood plug and is fairly small, 3/4 wide and 1 inch deep chamber.
Too late.
There's a blog post on pipemagazine.com saying the collection was sold at auction last year.

And to think, so man in the 1800s had a collection of 7,000 pipes.

That’s like 7 pipes right? I think I have seen you with at least double that.
