@motie2 There was a vid posted here at TPL somewhere, some time ago, that featured a pipe making shop. It went on to mention they also made briar earrings, necklaces, knickknacks and other curiosities (again, all briar), and brief glimpses were given in the video. Looks as if Savinelli took it one step further...🤔
@motie2 @jfreedy Do you think that dragon pipe would give you a HOT smoke, or tongue bite, or... wait fo it... dragon's breath... Sorry, I couldn't resist...
@motie2 Ahh, it has “Pablo” on the shank...as in reference to Picasso no doubt....AND it covers crap wood AND it’s French. Maybe it’s 60’s-70’s cool....I wouldn’t know though, it’s before my time😬
@motie2 That “Vector” pipe I have has some weird marble looking paint? on it. I bought it when I was younger and dumber and thought it looked different, it smokes wet as hell. It is slated for the auction block. I think it was made by BC as well?
@motie2 Yea, the few I have are all briar, but only the “Vector” branded one has the weird paint/varnish/sealer. Chalk that one up to my “newb” status when I bought it. I’m not sure what possessed me🤪. It’s definitely not the “cat’s meow” I thought it was. I think it was because it is a “mini-churchwarden” and seemed like a limited run. 🤔Now I know why....they probably didn’t sell many except to suckers like me.
@motie2 That BC pipe above. I thought the poor guy just couldn't make up his mind what color he wanted to use...😏 You can also call it a "dissociative disorder" pipe...
Yeah that looks like one of Alex's pipes, he lives about 25 miles north of me and has been a consultant / instructor along with Jeff Alan for our pipe making seminars at the Chicago pipe shows.
He has in recent years been teaching his daughter to make pipes and she has gotten to be pretty good at it I might add. Man I miss having the show, and the way things are going, this year is looking dubious too.
i fun fact about this commission (my only 2nd commission ever and from the same maker for both) is that I almost always prefer a sandblasted pipe. I requested one for this mini calabash, but as Chris began making it, he said the grain was too nice for a blast and suggested for the same price to leave it smooth. I wasn't sure, but I listened to him figuring he knew best and well what can i say? the grain is beautiful and i love it!

Sorry, I couldn't resist...
What pipe blend does NOT give one dragon’s breath?
”But why?”
To salvage crap briar...or maybe disguise some other bowl material?
For $75.00 ?

<< Most Butz-Choquin pipes are machine cut and sanded, and finished by hand from Corsican and Moroccan briar. >>
I guess the key word is “most.”
