Hi everyone! New to the boards, but been a pipe smoker off and on again for 25 years.
Started when I was in high school with a Dr Grabbow and a pouch of Captain Black.
Smoked a pipe through college, mostly aros and OTCs, but fell out of the hobby and packed my pipes away about 10 years ago.
3 years ago, I quit smoking cigarettes and gave away my entire collection (still kicking myself for that) thinking I would never come back to the hobby.
Found my last pipe that had somehow escaped the great purge (Savinelli Bent Billard Army mount), about a month ago and started smoking it again.
Just bought a MM diplomat so I could give the Sav a rest, and have been drooling over several websites' offerings ever since.
I feel like a newbie all over again, the excitement and thirst for all things pipe are hitting all the right neurons.
I live in the Houston TX area, and am looking forward to digging deeper into the hobby. Now if I can just get past this nightmare that the shipping world has become and get some more tobacco in my hands all will be good.
@Xandir; Glad to have you as a TPL brother. I have traveled a pipe journey very much like yours. I didn't pitch any of my pipes(except those that were junk). Lots of knowledge and advise here. Quality people that share a love of pipes.
@PappyJoe I know there are, as well as the venerable Briar Shoppe in the Rice Village (my local B&M). Unfortunately I have a health condition that makes COVID a near certain hospital stay, and not eligible for the vaccine. So I am going to be home bound for at least another year of quarantine. No B&M visits for a while unfortunately.
@xandir I've been living in Slidell, Louisiana - about 30 miles northeast of New Orleans and just before crossing into Mississippi - since 1989. I enlisted in the Coast Guard in Jan. 1972 with the plan to learn what I could about small boats and/or diesel engines and return to work for the same company my father was. He was a towboat captain out of Port Arthur. It only took me 21 years to finally get out of the Coast Guard and I learned a good bit about diesels but my career path took me into photojournalism and public affairs.
I had orders to the Coast Guard Air Station in Houston in 1989 but the orders were changed and I was sent to New Orleans instead. I retired here in 1993.
I have family living in Lumberton, Vidor and Groves, so I usually make one or two trips over that way a year.
@PappyJoe I know Slidell pretty well, as well as NOLA, my favorite city in the US. My current wife's family are Cajun/Creole hybrids from the Crescent City.
I appreciate the invite to the meet up on Friday, but I don't think I'll be able to make it. I will definitely add January to my calendar for sure though.
Hello Everyone, I have stumbled across this site back in July last year. With the world at its current state it’s nice to have this site to come to since there is no gatherings with fellow pipe enthusiasts. ⚓️
Hey guys thanks again for the welcome! I am in Dallas and of course there is not anyone here in the area that has what I am looking for but I figure one or two of you guys may know where I could purchase quality briar within the USA. I know Vermont has briar but I am looking for someone more of a wholesaler than a retailer? ⚓️

I actually live just outside the Delta now in Batesville, and work in Clarksdale.

Welcome. If memory serves, there used to be a couple of good pipe and cigar shops in The Woodlands.
Are you from the Houston area originally? I'm from the Beaumont/Port Arthur area originally.
Small world...
Grew up on the SW side of Houston, went to Texas A&M just up the road.
Now I live in a small bedroom community just outside of Houston called Missouri City.
Where are you now?

“American Smoking Pipe Company” has reasonably priced briar. Just don’t buy it all up, I need a few blocks 🙂
