It is with a great deal of sadness that we welcome you to the Christmas Edition of our catalogue, having taken the unbearably difficult decision to close our doors to business at the end of this year. After approximately 45 years of family ownership we believe now is the right time based on numerous factors, such as the escalating costs and difficulties of operating in today’s world, where Brexit will hamper our ability to offer our core products from Denmark, France, Germany and Italy, an irreversible decline in customer numbers due to archaic restrictions in marketing our products, a reduction in the number of reliable suppliers hampering our quest for quality and driving up prices, credit card companies who continuously threaten to stop all tobacco related transactions, and so on. Combined with the challenges of cybercrime, Covid and other macro-economic events, the future unfortunately does not look rosy.
I thought of Carey UK as pipe pornography - stuff I’d never experience - as the UK merchandise for sale often surpassed the US site.
Other than the two Careys and the Duncan Hill Aerosphere I bought from Carey US in the late Sixties, all my Careys were purchased used on eBay, or were gifts from TPL brothers.
I have, on occasion, bought tobacco from Carey US.
@motie2 I like radices, but oddly don't own any. just thoughts the walking stick was so unique. Never seen one before. i will have to check out the sculptor's mallet!
Searching for walking stick/cane pipes and I ran across this one (some joker beat me to the Radice 🙂). I wonder how much someone had to shell out for this baby. One of a kind Dunhill with gold and silver😳

<<Tobacco baskets, once a common utilitarian product in the tobacco markets, have become a hot commodity as wall art in homes across the country. The first baskets were made in Kentucky, but North Carolina became the primary producer of tobacco baskets by the late 1800s. There were at least six manufacturers of tobacco baskets in Yadkin County at one time, earning it the title of "Tobacco Basket Capital of the World.">>
Actually, they were used in tobacco processing. The workers would load piles of tobacco leaf on the basket and take it to the work table so they could strip the leaves and remove the stems. The could get a couple of bundles on the smaller baskets. The baskets were also commonly used to display tobacco at the old tobacco markets and auctions. It would be a little hard to display a few thousand pounds for buyers to sample, so the tobacco farmers would place the baskets full of tobacco on the tables for buyers to inspect.
That being said, there is nothing saying that those are real tobacco baskets and not smaller versions made for decorative purposes.

I've seen a lot of tobacco baskets in antique/junk malls across the south.
How were they used? In homes? They seem too small for commerce....

As usual, you are a fountain of information. Thank you for your enlightening response. I still appreciate the worth of learning something every day.
