ANNOUNCING THE Sutliff Virtual Pipe Club.
The Inaugural meeting, getting pipe smokers together, is being held July 26th – 29th. While new registration for the inaugural meeting is already closed, those interested in membership in the Sutliff Virtual Pipe Club are encouraged to register in time for the next meeting, in October 2019.
To register for the Sutliff Virtual Pipe Club, visit http://www.sutliff-tobacco.com and click on "About Us" and then on "Pipe Club Membership." It’s free.
Look ahead for the next 20 to 30 minutes. Do you expect any interruption? No, that's Ok. Are you cozy? Will people around you complain about your puffing? When choosing my tobacco I prefer those that have a good room note. I've been successful thus far, SWMBO likes to be with me when I'm smoking.
So much that I bought her a Peterson Dracula Smooth pipe, and added a blood red lipstick to the pack for it to "go together". As part of the how-to-do-it, make your significant other like it! Mine, when she's extra-happy and well humored, she will puff once or twice, and then leave the rest for me.
Have a good book? Swell! Fiction books are better. Reading from smartphones will spoil your tobacco and you may suffer a tongue bite. E-readers? May be... but it's not the same thing. The best reading companions are old hardcovers with yellowed pages.
Is it raining? Choose a place where you can hear the rain.
The company of an old and tired dog is also welcome. So much that "Old Dog" is a very popular tobacco blend.
You have chosen your place, you have chosen you time, now choose your pipe. Of course you should have more than one. Pipe tobacco is not expensive. Even the top brands. So you can spare for another pipe. I have a corn cob, old and faithful, and a meershaum one. I wanted a traditional briar pipe, but the day I could buy me one, I bought my wife that Peterson Dracula. Now I can smoke from a briar pipe whenever she agrees to take her two puffs.
Next, choose your tobacco. There are blends for every occasion. I've already told you about the "Old Dog". Did you choose "Lord of The Rings" for reading company? Today your blend is "Frog Morton". J R R Tolkien was a pipe smoker, and Frogmorton is a village in the Eastfarthing of the Shire. This blend is most liked by Hobbits and Elves. Dwarves prefer a stronger blend, like "Merde de Cheval". If the day time is important, there is Dunhill's "Early Morning Pipe", and Dunhill's "Nightcap". Do you want SWMBO to ask "What nice smell is that?" Try some Boswell's aromatic blends.
You have the time, you have the place, you have the pipe, you have the tobacco. Smell it. Put it gently into the pipe, over the tobacco pouch or tin, so that any tobacco that falls over won't get lost. Compact it, light it, and enjoy. Don't be upset if you need to relight. Happens all the time. Do not inhale, you value your health and your breath. You will need it in order to earn the right to smoke the "Exhausted Rooster" blend.
Pipe smoking is as much ritual as it is relaxation.
My tip for the day is simply don't "over think" what you need to do to get the most pleasure from smoking your pipe. While pipe smoking does have a learning curve, it is not rocket science. Just have fun! Over time you will discover what works best for you and don’t worry about what you’re supposed to do to enjoy your smokes. Just do what works best for you and if you discover new smoking experience enhancements along the way, great!
@Kmhartle Thanks for sharing that. I love reading about shipwrecks and survivals, and that's as good of a story as any. Pipes seemed to be a constant companion for those arctic explorers.
Do you have a favorite Latakia blend that you would like to smoke more, but due to to the heaviness it leaves on your palate, you refrain from smoking more than a bowl a day of that heavy Latakia? If so, try cutting that blend with an unobtrusive Oriental leaf that will add a slightly sweet flavor without adding body. Most quality Latakia blends already have Orientals in it to soften the power of the Latakia. But, find a quality bulk Oriental to mix with your heavy Latakia (first try adding about 30% of the Oriental and make adjustments until you find just the right mix). Just about any Oriental will do but I would avoid Izmir as it adds a lot of body. Most websites that sell blending Oriental tobacco use a mixture of several Greek and Turkish types that will offer what you are looking for.>>
@ron191 Thanks for the link. Interesting link but I had to laugh at the "one of the best corn cob pipes in the country" line since I think there are just two - Missouri Meerschaum and Old Dominion. I also appreciated the shade they tried to throw at Missouri Meerschaum for using plastic stems since they are using bamboo from California.

I just emailed my Sutliff contact and asked when they will be available. My guess is that they haven't been shipped yet.
Thank you, as always.
When someone finds either Eastfarthing or Panna Cotta please le,t us know......

How do you properly smoke a tobacco pipe?
