  • Smoking my ASPC Dublin again this evening.  I have it loaded with C&D “Espresso” this time.
  • We have had the illness ravaging our house of late. As soon as the kids go back to school it gets us. Trying...and the key word is trying, to load up my trusty Ropp cutty with some Davidoff English to end the night here.

    I ordered two tins each of the Kopp Stormy North and Kopp Stormy South and one tin of Kopp Flame 1919. They were supposed to be delivered on Monday but the Post Office screwed up and they were delivered today. 

    Therefore, I opened a tin of Stormy North and a tin of Stormy South and decided to smoke a bowl of each. 
    I tried the Stormy North first. It is an aromatic and the back of the tin says "Tonka Bean Toffee." The tin note actually reminds me of the Cordial Cherries that are usually sold over the Christmas holidays. Compared to US made aromatics, it is not goopy. I didn't have a real problem getting it lit and only had to relight it once. There were no goopy dottle in the bottom of the bowl when I finished it. 


    The back of the in of Stormy South says "Mango, Passion Fruit, Lilac." The mango and passion fruit play nice together and gives the blend a subtle tropical flavor like Rattray's Caribbean Dream except without the coconut. The Lilac is just a tad more pronounced than the mango and passion fruit but it is not really overbearing. Where I am less aware of the fruit notes as I smoke the bowl, the Lilac is noticeable throughout the bowl. 

    I want to point out that both of these blends are made by Kopp Tobacco (formerly Kohlhase & Kopp) the company that also produces most of the Rattray's and a number of other brands. Like most European made aromatics, the blends are not nearly as goopy as the ones made here in the US.

    I was looking at getting some of the “Stormy South” blend.  The toppings sound interesting.  I was worried that the lilac would be over the top.  I may get some yet.  Thanks for the quick reviews👍🏻

    Smoking some Panama Jack “Key Lime” this evening after dinner in my Pete SH Hansom Barley.  I loaded this stuff pretty wet.  This pipe has been a great smoker since the first bowl.  So far, no gurgle this time either👍🏻
    P.S. This stuff is tasty.😋. I wish I would have bought more.  I didn’t think it would be in, then out, of production so quickly.🙁
  • Decided to do some BCA in a totally reworked, repaired and restemmed Tom Spano. 

  • Smoked my new Pete POY 2024 with the “Key Lime” again.  It was a harsh smoke, not the sweet creamy smoke it was in the Barley SH Hansom yesterday. The POY bowl had some stain in it.  I should have sanded it out, but I didn’t want to accidentally scratch the rim on a new pipe.  This POY might be a rough break-in😖

    Suggestion:
    I have a few good size dowel rods that I cut to about 6". I then take one end, taper it and round the end to give a good fit to the bottom of the bowl.
    I then choose the rod that best fits the bowl I need to sand (leaving about a 16th" of play).
    I do a single wrap of 220 grit around the dowel, naturally towards the tapered end, and crimp the sandpaper at the tapered end.
    Making sure I hold the sandpaper tightly with the rod, I carefully place the rod into the bowl. Then I start turning (more carefully than I do a reamer). Depending on how long I sand, I can usually take it down to virgin wood, or close to it. And I've never had a problem marking or damaging a rim.
    Works for me, hope it can work for you...

    After a dinner of vegetables beef soup, made with some of the steak I grilled yesterday, I loaded one of my ASPC (Mark Tinsky) pipes with some Gawith, Hoggarth & Co. “American Peach” for an after dinner smoke.
    I’ve tried to suss out the “peach” in this tobacco, but I have never detected it, not in the flavor, not in the room note.  It’s a decent smoke, but I don’t know where the heck the “peach” is.

    Back in the day there was a peach flavored tobac. I think it was called Peach Blend ???? You may as well sucked on a hot branding iron. It was that good.

    Tried Tinderbox Peach Melba years ago. You couldn't smoke it slow enough to give a non-biting experience, not to mention the ghosting it left in the bowl!

    Total concurrence, but rather understated.
    I think today’s peach is Sutliff Taste of Summer.
    Don’t care for it, myself.
    Rolfe ruined peach for me…..

    It has been so long, 1960's would be about right, I don't recall the name. Peach Brandy may have been it. Or I may have sucked on a hot branding iron, I was a lot tougher back then.

  • Here lately I have been trying to thin down some of the englishes and Balkan  in the Ole chest to make room for more straight Virginia's so I have been trying to demolish the 4 cans of palmetto Balkan

    When I was living at home growing up, I had a hole in the kitchen/dining area screen for my starling “sniper hide”.  The dang starlings would get into my Dog’s food and water and ‘fowl’ them up😬.  Dog would hear the snap of my old Crosman PowerMaster 760 .177 cal. and shoot to the yard to look for the starling falling off of the phone line/cable wires where they perched.  Dog was a great dog, he loved going shooting with me, even though he was not a “traditional” hunting dog, his dad was 1/2 Malamute, 1/2 Wolf, his mom 1/2 Siberian Husky, 1/2 Wolf.

    Sadly, we had to sell “The Old Homestead” a couple of weeks ago, dementia sucks😢
    I wish it would have had more garage/shop space, I might have bought it myself.
  • Smoking some Newminster No.24 “Oriental Pipe Cut”, in my Peterson 2024 POY after a nice breakfast.  I had to brew another cuppa  joe to go with my smoke, the first was so tasty.
