I cleaned the factory coating out of my Christmas 2020 Pete, loaded up with Father Dempsey and to keep the theme going sparked it up using my Honest lighter.
Unfortunately and unknowingly I have broken the theme with a reworked noname while doing a 50/50 blend of Sutliff Black Cherry / Tinderbox Honey Cavendish. This combo is quite tasty and better than I thought it would be...
The little Pete 03 was smoking a bit wet. The tenon was chamfered, but not all the way to the outside edge so I decided to fix it. I used a 60 degree drill center bit first, then a 45 degree hand chamfer for wood, I finished with a #8 tapered drill bit. Smoking the same RLP-6 and it’s not gurgling at all, much improved. 🙂
Not so nice here, we got about 3” of the white frosty stuff the other day and it has not warmed up much. It’s currently 24F, still not bad for a December evening 🙂. Smoking some C&D “Espresso” in a little Peterson Short Natural #406. The stem was straight when I got it. I bent it down a hair and also chamfered the tenon on this one too while I was at it.
Growing up in Cleveland OH (the mistake on the lake) I thought I knew what winter was like with snow and cold sweeping across Lake Erie from Canada. I was wrong. In 1983/84 I found myself in Fargo ND for two years. I had no freakin' idea what cold, snow, and two months in the year when historically it has never snowed was like. The coldest it got while we were there was 40 degrees below zero.
Safely ensconced in NJ, I'll never be cold again......
The coldest I can remember that I have experienced in Montana is somewhere around -35F to -40F maybe a bit colder. I have been in -15F to -20F many many times though. I was curious so I looked up Montana all time lows/highs and found this tidbit: Most consecutive days at or below 32F for Montana set in West Yellowstone, Montana from Sep.1970-May1971 251 days at or below freezing...again, I am glad I have lived most of my life in Billings, the "Banana Belt" of Montana. I lived in Bozeman on two seperate occasions for four years each....it is definitly NOT a "Banana Belt".
I too am from Cleveland Ohio, glad to be down south that's for sure! Winter lake affect in Cleveland is pretty horrible. Not seeing the sunshine for months on end is pretty horrible. Salt and potholes destroying your car is pretty horrible. Short summers are pretty horrible too. Even with all that I said, -40 degrees is absolutely insane. I'd prefer Cleveland over -40 degrees if I had to choose between the two.
Went out today and fired up the wood-burning stove in my shed and smoked some Captain Black in my bent "The Pipe". It was 30 degrees at noon outdoors, but it went to 68 degrees in the shed after the stove did it's thing. I took all the old fluorescent tube lights down and replaced them with 4' LED's. It is way brighter than it used to be. Bright and warm. Too early in the day for a touch of the Irish, but life is good. Let it snow!!
Just received a Stanwell pipe today related to the sale P&C had $ 30.00, couldn’t pass it up. The tobacco is from Tobaccopipes, haven’t tried it yet, but it looked interesting.
Tonight, had some Mark Twian memoir in my old Dr graybow.
Thought it was a good idea for an after dinner smoke. But we have this cold front moving through and while sitting outside... Yeah, it was not relaxing at all!

What was I thinking?!
Ah, BCA... my personal favorite blending and go-to blend...
You were thinking that pipe smokers are a hardy lot, and you would be right.
