@RockyMountainBriar The moka pot is similar to a percolator. When you perc coffee if the heats too high it boils over making a mess and a bitter, nasty tasting cup of coffee. Give the video a look see and try working with @motie2 list and see if that helps. The silicone ring that came installed should be a good enough seal between the top and bottom pieces.
