As the heat index hits 100+ today, it was time to pull out two trustworthy friends...... Mac Baren Vanilla Flake and a @Corey562 Freehand pipe. Not only is it a great looking pipe, it’s a great smoker too. Especially with fold and stuff flakes.
This pipe is the second or third pipe I purchased in the mid to late 60's. It is a Savinelli Canadian Straight Grain #7003. It is a beautiful pipe. I the mid 90's I was working at Iowa State training firefighters, we were in the process of building a two story wood frame training building when I picked up a bundle of shingles and held it close to my chest. This beautiful pipe was in my shirt pocket and it broke the stem. I wanted to cry. I went into our shop and mixed some epoxy and put it back together. It's hard to see the repair, but I know where to look. It isn't the dumbest thing I ever did, but it makes the top hundred.
Smoking some of the C&D “Espresso” this evening in an L’Anatra Bent Dublin. This Tobak taste is nearly the same as BCA, with a little something, something. It might be the ghost in this estate pipe, I think it may have been a Latakia😖. This is the first time I have smoked this pipe. I am not picking up any coffee/espresso flavors though. I’m going to have to try it in a different pipe that I know for sure is not ghosted. It is smoking well, and is tasty, if the “Latakia?” was any stronger I would not be enjoying this though, just the ghost (or what I think is a ghost) is nearly off-putting for me, it would be better without it.As a side note, this Tobacco is perfect for big, heavy, multiple smoke-rings. It has a very thick creamy smoke👍🏻
The Latakia taste is fading👍🏻 I’m pretty sure now that it was a ghost in the machine.
Maybe its all those years of aging, but Flying Dutchman is starting to grow on me. Smoking in my Ben Wade "Golden Walnut" that I've had since the mid 1970's. A lot of my pipes and some of my tobaccos are starting to seem like antiques. Come to think of it, maybe I am too!
@opipeman That pic brings back memories. Back in the late 60's and early 70's, I always had a tin of FD on hand. I can't remember the last time I enjoyed a bowl of that nice blend. I'll have to start looking...
@KA9FFJ I don't know if they still sell it or not. I've had that in my stash for years, and don't know when I bought it. Good luck in your search. I'll keep an eye out as well!
This is a match to the old Flying Dutchman, made by Theodorus Niemeyer . Sweet, bright Virginias, mellow Burleys and a hint of soft black Cavendish are combined with a mellow, sweet top note that is smooth enough to enjoy anytime. MATCH - Flying Dutchman is one of the most popular match blends, for a very good reason.
On my screened-in porch doing some Tinderbox Peach Melba in a full bent meer. Nice blend, but will tend to give a hint of ghosting to a briar... BOY IS IT HOT!
It was 90-degrees yesterday but the humidity outside was only 46% so It may sitting under the shade tree with a light breeze comfortable. Enjoyed a bowl of Caribbean Dream followed by a bowl of Tillerman.
I tried a bowl of Danish Dice from a pouch I received with my order from Germany. There is very little information available as this is a European tobacco, but I think it's may be the same (or related to) Stanwell Danish Truffle. It's a cube cut aromatic flavored with tangerine (or mandarine orange) and Benedictine brandy. The flavors don't overpower the tobacco in my opinion and I don't get a overwhelming sense of either in the pouch I have. It's a very pleasant smoke.
I have also developed a liking for a diced or cube cut tobaccos because of the way they pack and smoke. Instead of packing, you more or less just gravity fill your bowl and don't tamp down too hard. The cut reminds me of the Peterson Founder's Choice which was a cube cut. The Founders Choice was slightly larger cubes than Danish Dice though.

I found what Pipes&Cigars.com calls a match for the Old Flying Dutchman. Might be worth a look?

My brief research indicates that Danish Dice and Danish Truffle are indeed the same blend. Sounds delicious. Enjoy it in good health!
