Gentlemen I am sort of cleaning up and updating my excel spreadsheet on which I keep my cellar inventory, dates, comments, etc. I have a section of many "frankenblend" recipes both already tried with dates, notations, etc, and many noted to try.
Would anyone be interested in seeing this, it could give some really good ideas out there for mixing blends, and could warn you off on some that didn't make the grade in my opinion.
Let me know......I can make a separate file to send to those interested, or just post a file on here......any opinions?
A Sherlock Holmes tribute it is. Going to load up this Pete Baskerville with some Pete “Sherlock Holmes”. It needs a little dry time however. When I recently purchased this pipe, the sterling silver has an even patina/tarnish on it. Since the pipe is a “Dark” version SH, I thought I would leave the tarnish as is....give it an even darker look. I removed the bowl coating and swabbed it with Bourbon awhile back. It has dried sufficiently. This will be the inaugural smoke.
The name is a reference to Sherlock Holmes' landlady. Since Holmes probably smoked a strong English blend naming a sweet aromatic after him would be inappropriate.
The blend consists of Sutliff bulk tobaccos blended together as follows:
Three parts (or 3 oz.) Sutliff Vanilla Custard
Two parts (or 2 oz.) Sutliff Chocolate Mousse
One part (or 1 oz.) Sutliff Crème Brulee
Comments:
You can substitute Sutliff Private Stock Molto Dolce for the Creme Brûlée, as the two are very similar, with the MD being just a bit sweeter.
@Londy3 SmokingPipes.com item #001-218-0012 They have a couple of small matching tobacco jars too 🙂 I have not made up my mind on which one I want, that and I need to set aside the cashola. It took me a couple of years, maybe more to finally decide to get the ashtray. Getting it on their Black Friday sale helped. If they are out of stock, get on the in stock e-mail alert, they replenish the stock fairly regularly.
@Londy3 The notorious Mr. Brog has a very nice pipe smoking ashtray with cork knocker; my eldest got it for me for my last birthday; says it was very reasonably priced. Also check out Amazon and eBay.....
@jfreedy Know what you mean. 3-4" rain in 24 hrs. predicted starting late afternoon/evening. Flood watch involving most of the St. Louis area... Hope it doesn't come to that... 🤞 Nice looking pipe you have there brother...
I spent the day at the lake fishing with my trustworthy Missouri Meerschaum and Balkan Sasieni. With the weather moving in to Kansas City tomorrow and Saturday, I figure my fishing days are limited.
@Londy3 ~ P&C is offering a free pipe ashtray with the purchase of 3 Mac Baren tins.
Trying to exercise the Latakia ghost out of this “refurbed” estate pipe from SP.com with some C&D Wintertime Reserve “Sugarplum”. When I received this pipe, I reamed out the chamber to get rid of the last bit of cake that was remaining in the bowl after their cleaning. I then wiped it out with some high proof bourbon. I further cleaned and sterilized the stem with Everclear. I still taste the Latakia 😖. I think it will be “Sugerplumed” up after a full bowl though. Which is a good thing for me👍🏻 I think this would be very good tobacco without the dang Latakia ghost.....and of course....it’s limited edition tobacco. A bit chocolate and spice.
"It's not something I invented but something I was learned from some older than me pipe smokers 20 or 30 years ago. Its an alternative to packing your bowl with rock salt and filling it with grain alcohol. Instead, you pack the bowl of the pipe you are cleaning with damp used coffee grounds and let it sit for 24 hours. "The PappyJoe (no joy) part is that I found that a used K-cup of unflavored coffee will fill most bowls with just a little left over.)
Not sure about the science behind it, but the theory is that the acid in the coffee ground will soften the cake and then the coffee will absorb the ghost of the old tobacco. It is double effective at sweetening a pipe if you do the salt/alcohol treatment first and then the coffee treatment. After 24 hours, you dump the grounds and wipe out the bowl. I also rinse out the bowl with running tap water and then let it dry for 24 hours. (Briar is wood. It won't absorb the running water and it won't hurt the pipe as long as you are not soaking the pipe in it.)
I have used the coffee grounds in meerschaum pipes also but skip the water rinse."

@PappyJoe describes the Coffee Treatment
