@pwkarch Got my Medico apple in '66. Probably the same pipe #. Forget to take mine out of a pocket while on an "assignment" in '69. Never could convince the Corps they owed me a pipe, and I didn't bother to blow taps as I buried it somewhere in Cambodia...😏
@Balisong Well, on this particular pipe, I only had to drill out the shank part of the airway. Many of my other pipes I have used a tapered drill bit to taper drill the stem’s airway from the tenon up. So far on bent stems, I just drill to where the bend is. Most of the time that is where the airway tapers to the diameter of the tapered bit’s tip anyway. I have contemplated straightening a stem then drilling the taper, then bend it back, but as I said, every time so far, the bit went deep enough without that extra effort. I would never drill a stem to 4mm all the way through to the bit anyway. A word of caution…..don’t drill too deeply and through the top of the stem at the bend😳 If I were to make a new bent stem pipe, I would taper drill the stem while it was still straight, then put a tapered pipe cleaner into the stem airway and apply the heat to bend it to shape. The pipe cleaner will help keep the airway from collapsing when bending it.
Some C&D “Bright Virginia Ribbon” and “Turkish Izmir” mixed about 2/3 to 1/3 in a MM “Marcus”. I got it before they nixed the wide stainless steel? nickel? ferrule. It snowed a bit here today, so I am warming up with a little straight-up “Yukon Jack”. I like the feel of the original bits on MM’s but my teeth seem to almost cut through them with the lightest pressure. One smoke and they are thrashed. When “Panama Jack” tobacco was being made, they had a few of this shape pipe made as a “go-along”. They had a white stem. I wish I had grabbed one before then went the way of the Dodo. Oh well, someday I will make a custom stem for it anyway and I can make it, nearly, whatever color I desire, depending on material available. Maybe faux ivory🤔
38° out this morning, had to move from the front porch to the back porch where the sun is. Finishing up my tin of Cult Blood Red while the wife is at work and the kids are napping.
Not a damn thing! Right now I'm eating the best sandwich ever invented...a leftover turkey, lettuce, tomato, onion sandwich with so much salt on it that hypertension becomes moot and so much mayo on it (real mayo, not that fake stuff) that I'll have to take twice my normal dosage of cholesterol medicine tonight to keep my arteries open while I'm asleep.
BUT, I will be going out in a minute and smoke some Founding Fathers in a cob!!!!
No joy so far. Still waiting to hear from the promised plumber. Seven for dinner last night. Pain in the tuchas without use of kitchen sink, water, etc. But we muddled through. Turkey was good, but overshadowed by a ten pound brisket my eldest smoked and brought to dinner.
Thanks for asking. SWMBO Is really antsy without being able to fully clean up.
Who brings a brisket for Thanksgiving anyway! I'm mean, why not bring a fish or something (Everybody Loves Raymond had a hilarious episode on this very topic)! It's turkey day! I'd be antsy too by the way.
@mfresa When I lived in Lubbock for several years, of course, beef brisket was on every menu 24/7...usually unappetizingly smoked with mesquite (I prefer mine dry rubbed over Kingsford). But for Thanksgiving, they still always served turkey...again, unappetizingly smoked with mesquite, but at least it was turkey!
SWMBO makes great a oven roasted brisket, but we don't have a smoker, and our son does. And, for a nice change of pace, it was terrific. There's more turkey left over than brisket, but it's all gonna wind up eaten....
Son and his wife in from Vegas and spending a few days here during the holidays. They left to go visit our daughter, son-in-law and the 2 grandkids. Taking advantage of their absence and doing some Ashton Rainy Day in an Emerald MM cob...
@vtgrad2003 I’m with you, I live for Turkey Day and the awesome leftover Turkey sandwiches….but…..that onion screwed the pooch. Ya might as well put Perique on it😬
We just finished the first leftovers dinner, a cottage pie, turkey leg and thigh mixed with green beans and turkey gravy in a casserole topped with roasted pumpkin. For dessert I'm enjoying a pipe full of Charring Cross.
Just polished off a big stack of potatoes, stuffing, turkey, smothered in gravy. Ate some homemade cranberry sauce out of a ziplock along with three deviled eggs…from another ziplock. Hey, I’m single, why dirty up dishes? Finished with about a third of a pint of Baskin Robbins pecan praline caramel ice cream. My after dinner smoke is some C&D “Carolina Red Flake with Perique” from the 2020 run in the Peterson Rua Spigot XL02.
@RockyMountainBriar I agree with @motie2's comment and I've been wanting to try an XL02. Smoking Pipes had a nice fresh sandblasted Lestrade and 15% off, it's should be here Monday! After your detail on opening up bent stems I may experiment.

…. and the shirt is pretty damn nice, too. (IMHO)

is this here an example of premature irony?
