I am at the moment furloughed, not laid off. So furloughed is better than laid off, I guess? I just hope things pick up after the closures quickly so that I do not end up being laid off.
They are still hard at work. If they were underway before all this started spreading then chances are none of them have contracted it. I'm more worried about the service members ashore at small units and bases and all the ones at major Army and Air Force bases.
US Navy ships used to be a regular "Petri dish" when it came to viruses. the flu, colds, etc. back in my day ('68-'74) at least on our small ship. We were pretty much stacked like cord wood in (2) very small berthing compartments. Of curse the asbestos fireproofing on everything probably kept the short term illnesses down in favor of the future mesothelioma.........
This morning's news said that the skipper of the USS Roosevelt has been relieved of his command because word got out that he has at least 18 of his crew down with Corvid19.

He lost his command, but he didn't get demoted or threatened with court-martial. That being said, this incidence may not prevent him from getting another command but I doubt he will ever make flag rank.
A conundrum in my way of thinking. As I understand it, he tried to go up through the chain of command in proper channels but was not getting approval to dock in Guam as his crew were falling ill with this Pandemic . The fact that he took the course of action he finally did makes me think he was frustrated at either the answer or the BS that he had to go through in the new damn near "political operation" of the military. He committed career "suicide" as he will never get to a flag position. Awaiting some more clarification, if this is the case he is exactly the kind of Commanding Officer I would love to have. So far it sounds as though he was taking care of "his" crew, the men and women of "his" command. Do you give up OpSec to the ChiComs? Do you breach every proper protocol established in communications procedure? No, there is a penalty for that. He decided his personal penalty was worth the lives of his crew. Just my $0.02.....
I could be totally wrong here, and I don't think we will hear much more about this for security reasons.

By the way, I'm not sympathetic towards the Captain. He endangered the ship by making its readiness status known to the general public. I understand why he did it, but he was wrong for doing it and basically just proved he can't be trusted.
Well, I have been out of work for a week, and I’m already adding bourbon to my French toast batter and the maple syrup. Is it right, I don’t know? But it is tasty😋 I guess to be fair, I put bourbon in my maple syrup before I was furloughed😬
@PappyJoe, you make legitimate points, my reasoning for saying his crew gave him a rousing send off wasn’t meant to say he was right or wrong, only to say apparently his crew thought highly of him. In situations like these we don’t know what led up to him taking this action. For now I will hold off judgment.
Doing ok. Still on quarantine. If I don’t show symptoms by the 13th I can go back to work. The other guy is starting to improve so that’s good! Thanks for asking. How are you holding up?

Well I got the call just a little bit ago. I'm having to go back to work tomorrow morning which is earlier than when I was supposed to.... One of my guys had to take his wife to the hospital the other night and now they believe she has the virus. They have decided he is at a higher risk of contracting and spreading the virus at this point than I am. Since both of us being out would leave my shift too undermanned... Back I go.
