@ghostsofpompeii, I’m so sorry and cannot begin to imagine what you are going through. Your post brings up so many thoughts and emotions. Thinking of you, and reflecting on life and relationships in general.
Thanks to all for the well wishes and sympathetic words of comfort - it is greatly appreciated. I'm just beginning to come to grips with this but my son is still struggling mightily. Like most have expressed, there really are no words to lessen the pain, other than being there can bring temporary comfort. Sometimes simply sitting together in silence around the kitchen table sharing a cup of coffee is enough. The bond of shared grief needs no words.
@ghostsofpompeii I'm still catching up on everything since being out of country for 10 days. Finally got to "Good and Welfare" and read of the untimely loss of your grandson... I am SO sorry and I will be adding you and your family to my daily prayer list. I wish there were words of comfort I could give you, but in these situations I find myself without words. Please accept my deepest sympathies...
It seems an odd thing to do, pushing the LIKE button when responding to someone giving you their condolences for a death in the family ... but it's the only option available to express my heartfelt 'Thank You'. Thanks to all for being there. It really meant a lot. That pipe sure came in handy these last few days. It helped to foster up all the good memories and provided some peace and tranquility.
@pwkarch took note of a tornado touching down in Springfield OH (there's a Springfield in every state.....).
As it happened,SWMBO and I left Wednesday morning for South Yarmouth MA, where she had a painting in a Pastel Painters Society of Cape Cod competition/exhibition. So we drove there for the day, stayed over Wednesday and came back today (Thursday). Got home about 7pm; missed the Wednesday tornado, which actually touched down about five minutes away from our house, tore an air conditioning unit off a theater multiplex, and crushed a big trailer; also scattering detritus everywhere. But no harm' no foul.
Just two long drives in the car. But, ya know, SWMBO and all..... I just do what I'm told.
Tomorrow: a pipe on the rear deck if there's no more rain.... It's thundering right now.....
@motie2 Glad all is well on the homestead, and glad you are well enough to travel. How did "the Boss" do in he judging?
And you better always do what you are told........In the Navy due to my "rate" I had authority, in my civilian career as a partner in our AE firm I had authority. At home, I have very little authority beyond what color tee shirt I will wear on any given day (and even that is questionable at times). "Oh, how the mighty have fallen".
Well, I survived 2018, despite the sciatica, shingles, total urinary blockage, two surgeries, weeks on a Foley catheter, months on a suprapubic catheter.
Today is my 73rd birthday, and all that bothers me still is the sciatica.
Today is also SWMBO's and my 50th Wedding Anniversary, as males in my family get married on their birthdays.... so one NEVER forgets one's wedding anniversary.
Many of my friends sought to dissuade her back in the late Sixties, saying, "What the hell are you thinking?"
Happy Birthday, and Happy Anniversary......so happy you are feeling better with all that physical misery behind you. Now, start laying the groundwork for the next 73 years of life, and he next 50 years of love...... Just do what you are doing, obviously it is working, and working well. Question: Is that a recent photo? Because I have to comment that you look like a 30 year old Liberal Arts Professor......nice beard though.
@motie2 I am more than happy for you and SWMBO. Although health can NEVER be underestimated, having a companion to share life with is such a blessing. Happy Birthday & Anniversary my friend... May God grant you both good health and a happy life till He calls you home... Sidenote: I'm glad I'm not the only one with "John Denver" glasses... 😄
@motie2, much success and good will to you and your wife, Happy Birthday and Congratulations. I know I speak for all of us here at TPL,your presence is inspirational and very much welcomed. Thank you.

Happy Anniversary to your wife as well.
I have heard, Great Wife=Great Life.
@motie2 that is an amazing accomplishment. Congratulations my friend.
Happy birthday as well. The cake pictured here can be used for both occasions.
Enjoy!
