Sorry guys. I have to apologize for unknowingly being off-topic. I just read the first post and realized the subject is concerning new pipes to purchase. I saw "pipes" and just started blogging... Again, my apologies...

@KA9FFJ I've seen a lot of configurations while scouring antique shops and second hand store but never saw a stem that attached in that way.

@KA9FFJ I respond to a lot of messages, unfortunately I don't offer much in the way of useful information. I've assume the role of the guy on the site who knows even less than you do, so you'll never feel inferior. @motie2 Well who knew? As usual, you come through with info on subjects that have almost long been forgotten. So Kentucky Club promoted this "system" pipe. I've now refurbed it and, although it's not my best work, it looks a whole lot better than it did before I started. Thanks again for the links you provided. It was immensely helpful...

Its a millard system suposed to keep moisture down. I am guessing the moisture from the bowl gather in the open area around the tube that leads into the stem.

@Corey562 You're right, but it sure leaves a hard area to clean down inside the shank and stem. Must be a cleaning trick I have to learn yet...

@KA9FFJ Boy I'll bet the stench can really build up in that area if you don't make a consorted effort to clean that specific location.

@Corey562 I looked up Millard Pipes and to clean the chamber required a folded pipe cleaner and thinned down cotton swab.

@Woodsman @ghostsofpompeii I took a pipe cleaner, soaked it with pipe cleaning solution and went to work. I wound up looping each end plus also looping the middle of 3 pipe cleaners before I was able to see it shine like new. It probably had never been cleaned. It should be easier now to keep it that way...

Nice horn pipe @motie2.  Not sure I'd smoke it though.  Only because it is really a beautiful pipe and would be a great display piece.
