@motie2, actually those "fins" are called "strakes" and can be very fragile, when buffed on a high speed buffing wheel. The Weber Streamliner is one production pipe that appeals to me, and most restoration experts agree, that running a buffing wheel at high speed can be tricky.
@motie2 I have 3 police officers that live within a block of my house. If they saw me smoking that "S Pipe", I can see them pulling over and wanting to know what I'm smoking in it...
@motie2 Personally I do not like these pipe iterations. All I have, and all I will ever buy are your basic, prototypical "old fashioned", run of the mill, standard, everyday, no frills, run of the mill, briar or corn cob pipe. I appreciate the work that goes into these (in my humble opinion) weird looking pipes, but these are not for me. I do not want to smoke a "piece of art".
Some of the pipes I see online are just amazing to me and I can't believe that people pay those prices just to be avant garde. Although this particular pipe is certainly inexpensive enough, speaking in generalities on "artistic" pipes I would rather have a few "decent pipes" and spend my money on the leaf.
I am with you @pwkarch 100%. I have stayed with traditional shapes, both smooth and ... What? .... Rusticated? Sandblasted? However, I do admire some of the more ... What? (again) Imaginative? Creative? Avant Garde? for their artistic worth. The one above is abstract/bizarre, but I like it. Wouldn't want to smoke it. I wouldn't buy it. (Also because it's over $20.00 which has been my limit for 8 of my 9 pipes. That also explains why I didn't win the Carey Saucer I was bidding on a while back.... it was amazing.)
Give me a well-made "workhorse" pipe any day and I'm happy. But that's not to say I don't appreciate a beautifully hand-crafted pipe made with an artisans' touch... Check out @Corey562 work. Classic, beautiful and functional... The complete package...
