@Woodsman From the looks of that pipe, and if the elves are smart, they'll make themselves scarce around Santa for a while... Looks as if he's ready to beat Rudolph until his nose stops shinning...
My latest EBAY find. This pipe caught my eye and I kept a close watch on the bidding and waited until the last few seconds to swoop in and place my bid - and surprisingly actually won for a change. Usually I end up on the losing end of an EBAY bid but this time I guess I had a top bid high enough to get a win. And in the end got it for about $20.00 less than I figured I'd have to pay for it to win. The pipe ended up costing me $51.00 but it's a real beauty. And another from H.S. Studio. Once it arrives in the mail I'll do a proper photo shoot - but for the time being I'll just include the photos from EBAY. Won't be able to smoke it until after Christmas because it's another Christmas present that's going directly under the bed along with all the tobacco my wife has stored away. She shops for Christmas all year long. That way we don't have to go nuts looking for presents a few weeks before the actual holiday.
@ghostsofpompeii That is one heck of a pipe! I can't imagine the time it took to design and create that pipe. In a unique way, it's really a work of art. Was it previously smoked or do you get the privilege of breaking it in?
@KA9FFJ It's an unsmoked pipe, and I'm itching to pack it and smoke it. Unfortunately I have to wait until Christmas. I fell in love with it the moment I saw it, but figured it was going to end up way out of my price range. I normally don't like to go too much higher than $50.00 for a pipe - but I will go as high as $75.00 if it's something really unique.
On the flipside I understand all the hard work and craftsmanship that goes into making a pipe and feel like a jerk when I place a bid. Especially when someone has a pipe listed for a certain price that I can't afford to pay ... but has the option of making a 'best offer'. I feel as though I'm insulting the pipe maker when my best offer would be about $20.00 under their asking price. When the bidding starts at zero and works it's way up I don't feel so bad making my offer because expectations are not as high. It's when I see the pipe maker has put an asking price on their hard work, and that it breaks my heart to low ball my bid cause I know they put their heart and soul into it. And here I am trying to save a few bucks. Which is why I don't usually bid on a pipe with an asking price, even when the option exists for a 'best offer'. If it was a DVD movie or music CD that would be another thing altogether. But when it's something handmade by an artisan it's always hard for me to bicker.
@KA9FFJ When it comes to lowball bidding on an EBay auction, or any auction for that matter, I say lowball away. "Dickering/haggling" whatever you call it is half the fun. If the person does not want to counter a lowball offer and gets all butt-hurt, then they should have put the lowest starting price they are willing to accept in the auction to begin with. Me, I am not a mind reader, I don't know how low is too low for someone. I have purchased items at very low offer prices. Some so low I thought for sure they would counter. If the bid is too low, then they can counter bid, it's the name of the game, otherwise they can ask for the price they actually want. People that put up a "Best Offer" and then get pissed for a low offer probably don't want to sell for less than the "Buy it now" price anyway, it just "looks" like they might sell for less as a mental game. Just my two cents.
@RockyMountainBriar Agree all-around. But if that's not considered as one unique pipe, I'd love to see your collection! Most of my pipes are what I call standard shapes. I do have maybe 5 - 8 pipes that are not found on the "accepted charts", but when I see a pipe like that one, to me it is very unique. I love it, and happy for you for your acquisition...
@KA9FFJ Maybe I should have said that is a very unique pipe, and by "not in my wheelhouse", I meant it is a pipe that does not really appeal to me personally. I do admire the artistry and craftsmanship involved in it's creation. I have over 400 pipes, and most are standard shapes. I only have a couple of shapes that are outside the "norm". I have found that I generally don't like pipes with an "organic" look. I do have quite a few with different "systems" for "improving" the smoking experience though.
@KA9FFJ, @ghostsofpompeii Oops guys, my previous "Best Offer" post was in response to ghostsofpompeii's reluctance to start with a low bid in a "best offer" auction.
@RockyMountainBriar That's quite a collection! Maybe one of us ought to start a discussion category called COLLECIONS and little by little, or in groups, display some of our pipes. It wouldn't take me too long as I have around 60 - 70 pipes (not sure). But it would be interesting to see others collections...?
@motie2 That Halloween pumpkin pipe is a real beauty but for the $220.00 asking price it seems a bit steep for a pipe you can realistically only smoke during the Halloween season. Sure you can smoke it anytime of the year you want ... but you'd get some mighty strange looks if you're smoking it in spring or summer. Whereas if someone sees you smoking during the Halloween season they'd go out of their way to tell you what a cool looking pipe it is.

That is one unique pipe. Not really in my wheelhouse, but that pipe is imbued with some craftsmanship.
