Smoking some of the C&D “Edisto”…after letting it air out for an hour. It’s was sitting 12% moisture. Loaded in a 1927 Dunhill and smoking fine, albeit rough around the edges, and a little harsh. I think it needs some age on it.
Tonight I’m having Samuel Gawith Balkan Flake in my newly acquired Pyrolytic graphite “ The Pipe”. I bought it because my sons favorite color is orange. He though it was a good buy. I own several “ The Pipe” pipes. They don’t ghost and I’ve never had a bad experience. Some say they smoke hotter than the hinges of Hells gate. It’s never been that way for me. The drink is the fruit remnants of an old fashioned. Think I’ll have another!
@RockyMountainBriar@Balisong You are spot on; I figure there are about 20 different descriptors he reuses for each blend...and I still can't figure out one he uses for nearly every blend which is 'grassy taste' or hay or something like that. My wife and I (to a much lesser extent) used to run a horse breeding operation when I was in graduate school and kept about 60 acres of hay for cutting to supplement what we bought...have you ever tasted grass? If I bought a tobacco that tasted like grass I would throw it in the trash.
Inks is from down here in Greensboro...about 25 minutes down the road from me; the guy is treated like a god in that city for some reason and I think some of that persona spills over into his posts. I also question his ability to taste the subtleties of blends. From what I understand (and I could be wrong) he smokes like a steam engine from when he wakes up to when he goes to bed--probably 10 or 12 bowls a day from what I've heard. I think I would certainly find it difficult to believe that his tongue (and taste buds) doesn't get substantially 'ghosted' with other blends and that he can pick out all the flavors he says he does.
I'm sure he's a great guy and all, and certainly knows tobacco and pipes, but I sometimes think he might be caught up in all the popularity he's given in the tobacco world.
Another day, more tobacco soon to be gone. I loaded up some GH Balkan Mixture in an MM Diplomat which I'll start after I finish last nights Dunhill London Mixture.
And yet companies still send him blends to smoke before they are released to the public.
He is a nice guy and I've communicated with him in the past and have actually spoken to him via phone several times. That being said, I agree that his review has a certain cookie-cutter quality to them. But then again, there are similarities between all Virginia blends.
@RockyMountainBriar Exactly. That and the fact that JimInks earned a reputation (whether you agree with what he writes or not) of being knowledgeable about tobacco taste. So companies have decided to send new blends to him and get his opinion. Then he will post a review just before the blend is released to retail.
@PappyJoe It’s probably pretty tough to find someone willing and able to smoke that much pipe tobacco in this day and age. My hat’s off to him, it would take a serious commitment. And, like was said, all the “families” of tobacco are similar.
Well, since I stabbed some holes in the little Bandito to test the moisture, I guess I have to smoke it. I would not normally smoke a stogie in the house, they are generally way to odiferous, but these are small and do not have a crazy strong cigar aroma. I need some cigar ash for pipe-mud anyway.

What better way to advertise a new blend than send some to a very well known persona in the pipe world to review.
Another sweet rework!

It's a good job if you can get it.

Sidenote: nice lid...😉
Here they are...
That's a beauty!
Sorry this one is a keeper. 😀
