Smoking some 2019 PS Luxury Twist Flake in a no name billiard. I stoved a couple of ounces of this two weeks ago and will try it out tomorrow. You’re supposed to let it sit a couple weeks after ‘cooking’ it. Supposedly this simulates the maturing process. So I’m hoping it will taste like it’s been been aged an additional 4-6 years. I’ll let you know.
@jfreedy Stove it how? In your oven? What temp? I never tried that. It sounds very interesting and I'm also curious about the room note if your do it my this in your house.
<<I use a Whirly-Pop on my indoor gas stove, or outside on my Coleman Camp stove. I have done two pounds at a time, but I think I could do three. I have not tried it yet. I still use the Whirly-Pop for popcorn too👍🏻 >>
REPOST FROM 2018 by @xDutchx, presumed to be MIA, AND OF BLESSED MEMORY….
<<I have used an at home stoving method with great results, which I read about in Dr. Fred Hanna's fantastic book entitled "The Perfect Smoke."
Basically, the method involves using a Virginia based blend, and placing it in the oven at around 180 degrees for 5 hours. I use a large blue enamel soup pot, but I have been meaning to invest in a large pyrex style pot, around the same size.
This method works great, and takes some of the bite off a young Virginia blend. I have even used it with good success on Vaper blends.
Be advised however, that once stoved, the blend will no longer benefit from aging. If you plan to let your blend rest for a few years, skip the stoving process and save it for a blend that you don't have the patience to age.>>
Finished mowing, trimming, and using the blower on the yard. 90° here with index of 98°. Decided to relax with some C&D Expresso in a reworked noname that has 3 cracks on the outside of the bowl. It's turned out to be a great work pipe for over a year! Just goes to show you that there's sometimes something to be said for an old pipe that most people would have thrown away...
🤔I would think that 180 degrees for 5 hours would ruin the hell out of some good tobacco?? When whomever did this “stoving” did they somehow retain the correct humidity all through the process or just “cook & dry” it? Sounds “sketchy”🤔
Smoking my stoved PS Luxury Twist Flake in the same no name billiard I just smoked the non-stoved version in.
@mfresa - I think it’s a lot better ‘stoved / ‘ovened’ than the regular version. It seems to really take off any harsh edges and mellows out the blend. It also tastes sweeter and ‘breadier’ than the original. I’m really enjoying it.
@Londy3 - yes, I used that exact procedure (2 hours @ 190F, then rest 2 weeks) from the pipes magazine forum post. I did it exactly like the post. The general consensus is that it works most magically with predominantly Virginia flakes like Luxury Twist Flake. Mine was already a couple of years old. So I’m sure that didn’t hurt. I don’t plan on doing this to any blends I plan to keep a long time. However, it’s perfect for a harsh or ‘too bright’ Virginia blend.
I didn’t really notice any smell while I was cooking it.
My next round will probably be PS Bullseye Flake.
PS (not Peter Stokkebye) - the longer I smoke this the more of that mellow, bready flavor I get. I’m actually enjoying it more now, about 45 min into the bowl, than at first. 🤔 Strange… but delightful.
Smoking some C&D “Espresso” (this is getting to be a habit), in an old WDC Dublin with a Redmanol stem. I have this old, cute, little WDC tamper to pair with it. The match safe is an old Gillette razor blade package, they were designed to be used as a match safe after the blades were used up. I bought it because it was old, and I have collection of old razors, mostly straight razors. It was before I knew it was a match safe. It took me awhile to figure out what the hell the striations on the bottom were for. Now it resides with my tobacciana.
I'm enjoying some Charring Cross in an MM Rob Roy after talking with a guy in Oregon that ancestry.com claims is my cousin. He thinks one of his dead uncles is my father. Adoption is a better solution than abortion!

Sorry. I went back and edited my last post, above.
Last night I had Seattle pipe club plumb pudding bourbon barrel aged in my Friday Savinelli of course!

Is this how you did it?
