I started the breaking in process. This pipe is sweeeet, and burns very cool. The cork must have something to do with how cool it smokes. I have tried several blends and the result is the same. I really love this pipe!!
@jfreedy; No, No No, it is a briar pipe made by Tom Spanu (cork wrapped bent). It is the most I have ever spent for a pipe. The cork is sliced very then and (glued??) to the Briar.
Deep cleaned that "new" Mastersen (inside and out) last night and early this morning. After taking advantage of the weather by doing some preliminary "exterior illumination" for Christmas, I'm now taking it for a spin with some Sunset Rum...
Smoking some Black Beauty in a Baronet billiard,@mapletop, I have to take advantage of the nice days, it’s in the 60’s today, I can’t smoke in the house period because its not mine & the local B&M doesn’t allow you to smoke because of the amount of cases so this is what I have to do.
Getting in a round this morning while doing some SWRA in a modified MM Emerald... @PappyJoe Pulled in my driveway after golf and here's who I see coming down the street! I jumped out and, after stopping him, asked if I could get his pic. He said sure, and that he was just riding around trying to spread smiles and grins... I was grinning...
I finished up the pouch of half and half in a MM before opening the can I just purchased. Sometimes when it all gets a little too crazy it is good to have a heritage Blend to fall back on.
I’m getting ready to go to bed as I work nights and sleep during the day, so my last pipe of this morning is C&D’s Briar Fox. The pipe before that was some of The Country Squire’s Second Breakfast; before that was a couple of bowls of Esoterica’s And So To Bed.
Out at my humble little garage work shop doing a small project for the wife. Waiting for the wood glue to dry becomes a great opportunity/excuse to have a bowl. Doing some Lane LL7 in a reworked GBD...
Smoked some Sutliff “Barbados Plantation” in a Pete XL305 System Deluxe (It may have been stamped incorrectly from the factory, I think it should be an XL5S?). I have one that is stamped as such as well.
@KA9FFJ I know a couple of Santas who ride Harleys. I'm actually working on a 4-inch wide Santa belt for one of them that has "Santa on a motorcycle" artwork carved into the belt.
While doing some “research” on Peterson System pipes today, I smoked five bowls back to back in different pipes with minor differences in the “System” components. I’m a bit smoked out, but I learned quite a bit about smoking the Pete Systems. I only have a few Peterson System pipes, most of the Peterson’s I have, have “normal” drilling. I usually smoke straight pipes.
Friedrich and Heinrich Kapp opened their first tobacco shop in 1865 back on Grafton Street in Dublin, Ireland. The brothers simply christened their new shop “Kapp Brothers”, and had little idea that they were participating in the birth of a true tobacco legend. Charles Peterson would turn their world upside down when he entered their pipe shop armed with a revolutionary new pipe idea and some pretty ambitious plans for the future of their business.
From that very first meeting on Grafton Street, Peterson suggested to the Kapp brothers that they go into partnership together and showcase a dream pipe idea to the world. After an agreement was reached, the company was then renamed to Kapp & Peterson.
This company would go on to become Dublin’s most respected and fashionable manufacturer of exceptional smoking products. Many cigar and pipe smokers would enter the shop for advice on choosing the best handmade pipe and cigar. The Peterson name was then embraced by business leaders, writers, artists, and politicians. Charles Peterson did not rest on his unique design; he continued to have a team of skilled craftsman fine tune his work as the years passed.
Whether you use the products for personal use or are purchasing as a gift, you will instantly appreciate the superior quality and range of the Peterson cigars, pipes, smoking accessories, and tobacco.
What Is The Peterson System?
The Peterson System creates a unique smoking experience that encompasses a cool, sweet, and dry smoke, due in part to the scientific effectiveness of the original design. At the center of this unique system is the graduated bore of the mouthpiece. Suction by the smoker is 15 times weaker by time it reaches the chamber. The end result is moisture can flow in to the reservoir and will not reach the smoker’s mouth.
The lip of this unique system also helps to enhance the effectiveness of that graduated bore. It works by directing the flow of the smoke up and away from the smoker’s tongue. This even distribution of the smoke eliminates the chance of bitterness and tongue bite. The shape is designed in a way specifically contoured so the smoker’s tongue will rest comfortably in that depression under the opening. The P-Lip mouthpiece is also made with vulcanite, a superior high-grade product.
The Standard System
The standard system pipes are comprised of high quality briarwood and a specially selected high quality bowl that is mounted with the hallmark sterling silver bands with an army type mouthpiece. These pipes are available in sandblast or smooth finish. In addition to the standard systems, premier system pipes come in the same shapes.
What are Briarwood and Fills?
Briarwood pipes are manufactured from a natural material, the briar root of Erica Arboria, growing in the Mediterranean area. Fills are used in areas of the wood with voids caused by the root growing around grit and stones in the soil.
The Sherlock Holmes Collection
The most successful of all the Peterson collections is the Sherlock Holmes. Produced for the first time in 1987 to honor one of the most famous fictional characters, Sherlock Holmes. This collection is available in ebony, sandblast, rustic, and smooth, coming with extra large bowls, 9mm filter, and Peterson fishtail mouthpiece.
The Hinge Lids
This series is a result of the union of hallmarked silver and mellowed briar. This series utilizes the highest quality bowls, combined with the intricacy of working the silver by hand so the cap fits the pipe perfectly.
The Peterson Collections
Every year the Peterson Company introduces new shapes and finishes to commemorate places, events, and famous people in history. They are available for limited times and appeal to the pipe connoisseur.
Peterson Pipe Tobacco
Of course every great smoking pipe needs filled with quality tobacco and Peterson provides plenty of selection. Their pipe tobacco includes traditional, aromatic, latakia, and seasonal selections.
I'm not sure about this statement: "Suction by the smoker is 15 times weaker by time it reaches the chamber. " If the stem is not open to the outside but through the bowl, then whatever vacuum the smoker pulls at the mouthpiece is constant down to the opening to the bowl. Maybe they refer to the drop in vacuum within the bowl itself...
Getting in a brisk (51°) round of golf in today. A buddy made me a pipe holder by slicing a small flat spot on a golf ball, then attaching a clip and covering the clip with self-stick felt. The ball snaps right in a spot in the cart that is designed to hold extra golf balls. Just loaded up some Lane 1Q in a noname "fall pipe". Thought I'd show you the holder...
Been home for a while from golf. If the weather has its say, it will probably be the last round I'll play for a while. Thankful to be able to get out and enjoy the day with friends... Decided to do a bowl of County Cork in a reworked noname...
On Wednesday I took the day off with the blessing of the guy I work for who is also a friend of mine, to run out and get 10 yards of mushroom compost with one of his dump trucks for my garden.
Today I started humping the compost (shit) to the various beds (garlic) via wheel barrow;, this is getting harder to do as i age, but its probably keeping me alive; my wife even assisted for a while in this endeavor.
My neighbors must wonder why it smells like like a farm next door, but that is organic farming in a nutshell,
It was only 40 forty degrees when i finished but I was dying to sit and have a bowl of Ten Russians, which I did (while standing) and having an extreme bourbon old fashion .
