I had a bowl of my own home grown, cured and pressed flake in a Rattray’s Goblin Straight Billiard, then a bowl of my “frankenblend” (aromatics), in a Russell’s Lovat. We had a nice fire going in the fire pit at a friends place out of town. Beautiful evening/night here, no wind, clear skies and about 40F after the sun went down. It got up to nearly 60F today. I think spring has sprung👍🏻 Technically, I guess it was last night. I got home at around 11:30PM😬
Reiner's Long Golden Flake loaded in a CAO Meerschaum.
The flakes are long and pliable. The toppings are barely there and I get just a slight hint occasionally of the orange. It's a mild smoke with a light to medium nicotine hit for me.
I think I'll buy some to keep around for breaking in new unsmoked or new estate pipes after a deep cleaning.
Last night I layered Russ' Fudge Cake with Sutliff Coconut Almond. That particular Sutliff blend is one of the few that really bites, so I usually have to mix it with something. Once that bag is empty I'll never buy it again.
Captain Black Royal in my bent Roma billiard in the porch swing while listening to Dick Dale. He's one of rock and roll's early guitar heros. He's worth listening to for the nostalgia value alone plus it's some fine music.
@ghostsofpompeii Hello Joe, what do you know? I read your post, which of the two blends was the "biter"? I have had that Sutliif Coconut Almond blend on my radar for when my next VA money arrives. Do I go for it or not? We seem to have the same tobacco tastes and opinions.
@pwkarch It was the Sutliff Coconut Almond that had quite a bite. It's one of the few Sutliff blends that gives me tongue bite. Usually the Sutliff aromatics are smooth smoking - even the ones that might be a bit goopy. As for the Russ Monthly blends offered at Pipes & Cigars I've been quite happy with all of them. If you're going to spend a little money on a blend I'd highly recommend Scotty's Trout Stream. For about a week after I received it I was almost exclusively smoking it.
Yesterday I actually got out on the rear deck and smoked a morning and an afternoon bowl.
Morning: The delightful one part each VBC, RLP-6, and BCA, and 3 parts Molto Dolce frankenblend I came up with. (ending sentence w/preposition -10pts.) Afternoon: Barbados Plantation.
