@rumrum4me I'm not so good at remembering a lot of the faces from older movies, whether or not I've seen a lot of a particular actor's films, but by chance, is my suspicion that this might be Errol Flynn anywhere near right?
The
contribution of pipes to victory in World War Two is a neglected topic.
The anti-smoking Hitler never had a chance against doughty old fellows
like this member of the Home Guard England.
This is Group Captain Pickard. He was captured in this picture smoking his pipe in front of his plane, a de Havilland Mosquito in which he was killed on a mission on the 18th of February 1944.
This is Group Captain Sir Douglas Bader. He was a pilot in the RAF in 1928. In 1931 during training he crashed and lost both his legs as a result. After the start of WW2 he insisted on becoming an activated pilot. With artificial legs he passed the flight tests and proved he could still fly a plane sufficiently well for combat. During combat he downed 26 confirmed kills and had approximately 11 damaged probables.
I've heard Captain Bader's story before. He was quite the character. Thanks for sharing these @Michael308 . To keep the theme going, here's Chesty Puller.
@RockyMountainBriar True, though I've come across quite a few American soldiers and sailors enjoying their pipes during WW2. I always enjoy seeing those pictures, and hope their pipes brought them some comfort during those tumultuous times.
