Christmas Eve is the Best. I have the same amazing memories and continue the tradition @Balisong Thanks for sharing yours. I didn't know you you're a pisano!
Tonight I made an open faced sandwich. I loaded a pan fried hamburger on pan toasted cracked wheat sourdough, topped it with mashed potatoes with a bit of garlic, onion, and parsley added, and some homemade mushroom and onion brown gravy. Topped with a little more fresh cracked black pepper and a sprinkling of “Alpine Touch”😋. To pair I have a pint of Guinness Stout, well, it was a pint when I started cooking😬. I will have to let this plate of food settle before I pick out a pipe and tobacco🙂.
@motie2 Interesting, I’m not a fan of shepherds pie, not sure why. I guess it’s close, and I have eaten it a couple of times🤔. No peas, no carrots, no green beans, I don’t recall shepherds pie having bread. I like peas, carrots, green beans. I like chicken-pot-pie. I wonder why Shepherds Pie doesn’t make my greatest hits list, it should🤔
Ahh, no gravy….at least the Shepherds Pie I have had, did not have gravy.
@Londy3; @RockyMountainBriar; I ran out of printer paper months ago. I use paper grocery bags and the back side of Christmas gift wrapping. The gift paper is easier to digest, but it gives my stool some interesting colors.
Tonight I threw something together, I’ll call it “Italian Style” Hamburger Soup (no offense meant @Londy3🙂), and some Parmesan, Italian Herb, garlic bread. I have it paired with some hot, smoky, Lapsang Souchong Tea. I thought it was fitting after that smoky Dunhill Standard Mixture Medium tobak I sampled earlier.
Something simple tonight. I have some pickled herring in wine sauce with some large curd cottage cheese and some broiled sourdough with a touch of rosemary and dill weed. I have some freezer chilled Skadi Aquavit from Montgomery Distillery in Missoula Montana to pair. I have some Sutliff “Mixture 79” and a Pete Sterling 53 Lovat on deck for after dinner.
Tonight it’s Smoked Sausage with potatoes and sauerkraut. To pair, I didn’t have a Weiss Beer, so some “Back Country Scottish Ale” from Lewis & Clark Brewing in Helena, Montana, the state capital, will have to do. I think I will drag out a meer tonight for after dinner.
Why is it, when I’m watching Westerns and they are drinking coffee and eating beans, I want coffee and beans around a campfire? It doesn’t matter what time of day or night, coffee is a go-to in Westerns. Were they immune to caffeine, or did they just sleep worse than I do all the time? Another couple of things about westerns…water is a cure-all for all ailments, even bullet wounds, and the stupid bastards stuck in the middle of a barren desert always throw away their canteen when it’s empty. They must all be pessimists, and never figure on finding water ever again. Wouldn’t they feel stupid if they found a cool, clean, water source and didn’t have their canteen to refill…silly bastards.
@RockyMountainBriar one would assume boiled water or coffee would be safer to drink than diareah enducing typhoid water that they had available. Personally I would just stick to whiskey.
Apparently I watched too many westerns lately. On tonight’s menu is some biscuits and beans, I didn’t feel like bacon, so the smoked sausage took its place. Along with that, a cup of coffee you can float a horseshoe in. What the heck, I don’t have a job, so I don’t need to get up early. Mmm, I cook good coffee🙂. @Zouave1864 Thanks for the suggestion, maybe some whiskey after dinner. I wonder how far I can make it through a fifth🤔
@RockyMountainBriar; Growing up in the late 40's-early 50's I've been a cowboy at heart all my life. I love biscuits and beans, but if that was all I had for three meals a day I might want a town job. Either that or die young from chronic diarrhea.

Now I have two favorite Italians.
That looks soooo good, Brother.
Comfort food right there
Sounds like a deconstructed Shepherd’s Pie. Yum!

🤔
Calling my concoction “Italian Style”🙂
It’s my German-Russian Heritage “Cultural Appropriation” of Italian cuisine.
That is certainly interesting for sure
Twas really good.
I love pickled herring.
@Londy3;
You guys are killing me. Either that or I'm consuming too much roughage.
