@vtgrad2003 There is not commercial fishing for redfish. They do allow commercial fishing for speckled trout but the can only use rod & reels - no nets of any kind - and they can't keep any fish over 14-inches. For awhile some restaurants tried hiring commercial fishermen to supply them with the speckled trout but I don't think that worked well.
The bigger problem over here is a lot of recreational fishermen decided to get the licenses to be charter fishing captains and many of them take four anglers on a trip and hammer the reds, specks, flounder and sheepshead. This and a loophole (in my opinion) allows the charter captain to bring in the same limit as his customers. With a 25 fish per person limit on specks, it really hurts.
My son-in-law is a charter captain and he normally doesn't fish during a charter unless they customers are struggling to bring in fish. He will then cap the limit at what it would be if he wasn't fishing. He also does a lot of catch & release charters.

LOL, you got flagged, you got flagged, you got flagged Welcome to the club! I take pride in it actually, because I know I just pissed off a libtard!!!!
Been in Hatteras for the last 5 days fishing: right now catching some pompano and flounder...no drum, blue, mackerel or shark yet though. Locals are slaying the sea mullet (aka whiting) to stock their freezers with. Stormy here though, hopefully can get some more good fishing in over the next couple of days before we go back home.
Yep. Born in Norfolk, raised in Va Beach, but moved out of VA when I was young and moved around in the South (NC/SC/GA area)...even lived on the Outer Banks for a while surfing and surf fishing. Now I live about 15 miles north of Greensboro.
Nowadays, yep, Hatteras is a twice annual trip for my wife and I (will be coming again in October), including East Point FL and Charleston SC. We frequent long weekends in the Fort Fisher Beach area throughout the year south of Wilmington. My passion is fishing, surf fishing in particular, but while home I do a ton of bass fishing as well.
Yesterday was a bit better of a day even though we had to fight storms all day long--watched the poles from the truck mostly. Here's two of the drum I caught just north of Hatteras point (see the lighthouse in the background). The top one was 29" (two inches over the slot) and the bottom was just over 27" which is right at the slot max; although it looks a lot smaller, it's just the way I'm holding it.
@Londy3 Hatteras is a long ways away from everything, and I wouldn't break from my vacation, especially fishing, for anything, lol. I have old buddies that live down toward Beaufort I don't even see when I'm here (or in Wilmington for that matter). If I was retired, it'd be a different matter altogether.
@vtgrad2003 I was born and raised in beaufort and on fishing/surf fishing. I remember it fondly. I don't get to do it as much as i'd like. My misses is from wilmington and i work around ft. fisher at least once a month and usually end up on the outerbanks for work some as well so i've been to all those haunts. Those are nice reds. There is a small creek not 1/2 mile from my parents home we put a canoe in and can catch slot sized drum all day long. Also our pipe club we schedule weeks in advance and we're somewhat flexible on location so we should work you in once you are back in Greensboro.
