So say when SPC has a 20% off sale like on a Black Friday or cyber Monday sale they are not making money...probably even losing money? In the few retail business I have been involved with, the markup has been at least 100%. I must have been working for some chiseling bastards, good to know.
Mark up has to due with turnover, the quicker the turnover the lower the mark up. Grocery stores generally don’t go over 5% max. Jewelry, furniture 100% plus.
I did an inventory count once for a hardware store (ca. 1983?), and a lot of the small things in the bins were marked up (so the paperwork showed) several hundred percent, and still retailed for $0.25 or less.
@motie2 I don't know if creating another Government Agency as opposed to the FDA would be any better or worse. I prefer the Government to keep their nose out of my tobacco pouch altogether. I have no problem with putting an age restriction on the sale of tobacco products (18 or 21 what-ever they decide ... but they should keep in mind that a kid of 18 can go to War and die for his Country, so that should be taken into consideration when deciding upon the age), but that's about as much as I want from my Government as it pertains to the sale and distribution of tobacco products. Some of Trump's best work has been the easing up or elimination of Regulations - so rather than create another bureaucracy to handle tobacco I'd suggest the same tactics used to free up restrictions on gas and oil production apply to the tobacco debate. Tear up the proposed Deeming Regulations and leave things as they were before vaping came into the picture and got the ball rolling for future tobacco restrictions.
@PappyJoe Yea, then we would all have a bunch of contraband. I will give up my pipes stuffed with tobacco when they pry my cold dead lips from around them😬 Of course, by the time they find me, my cat will have dined on all my soft parts to stay alive, so really no lips to pry from...too graphic? Sorry, I’m just a realist.
The U.S. House of Representatives is scheduled to vote on House Bill H.R. 2339 TODAY, Feb. 27, 2020. Known as the “Reversing the Youth Tobacco Epidemic Act of 2019,” this bill has the potential to dramatically alter the tobacco business in the U.S. with many measures that are designed to limit youth access and exposure to tobacco products, but, if passed, also will severely limit and damage retailers and manufacturers of deemed tobacco products, including premium cigars and vaping products.
The bill has many provisions of concern to those who manufacture and sell tobacco products. If passed, it will ban all tobacco products that contain “characterizing flavors” other than "tobacco flavor" from being sold in the U.S., including flavored cigars. It also will prohibit all non-face-to-face sales, thereby eradicating online sales of tobacco products. While the bill may have been inspired by last year’s vaping “epidemic,” it will have a devastating impact on all deemed tobacco products, including cigars, pipe tobacco, and e-cigarettes [read more here]. It also could prohibit the sale of menthol cigarettes in the U.S. if passed.
The Bill has 126 co-sponsors and will need 218 votes to pass the House and move on for a vote in the Senate. Retailers, manufacturers and consumers of tobacco products are encouraged to contact their U.S. Representative to voice their concern and opposition to the bill.

It's virtually impossible to wake up and have a pleasant day when the forces around you seem to be doing everything possible to keep that from happening. Not a day goes by when some negative news or daily event can change your mood from good to bad before you have time to finish that first cup of tea or coffee in the morning. I'll never understand how a State like California can provide free needles to homeless junkies that lay about in the street in various stages of mental decay - and other States including Illinois ( right next to me) have legalized the use of recreational marijuana, while at the same time lawmakers are making the purchase of regular tobacco products more impossible to acquire. This ruling will make on-line purchases impossible (meaning prices for our favorite tobaccos will be more expensive than ever as we're forced to buy strictly from Brick and Mortar stores ... while others like myself who don't have a proper tobacco store near me, will be forced to buy cheap non-aromatic gas station blends if we wish to continue the hobby.). If that happens ... then once my cellar is empty I guess I'll no longer smoke my pipe. Either that or I guess I'll be buying more Watkins food grade flavoring and make my own. And as history has taught me - that's a questionable proposition ... my success rate is not so great. Guess it's a good thing I'm going on 70. That means I won't be around that much longer. For the 20 something newbie just getting into the hobby, this is going to put a real damper on their enjoyment of the hobby.

That's called "cellaring".
