@thebadgerpiper - Congratulations. @ghostsofpompeii - I smoked my pipe in the house until 1987 when our youngest was misdiagnosed with bronchitis. Three years later she was correctly diagnosed with allergies and asthma so I pretty much stopped smoking around the house until she graduated high school. Now I just smoke outside because I prefer it and I have shade trees I can sit under.
@thebadgerpiper; Awesome photo! Makes me want another one(grandchild not a child). It might be a little tough on the Mrs. in her late 70's. Who am I kidding, I don't think I could help raise another one. Too old and slow to be up for the challenge.
@thebadgerpiper Tip: Start acquiring smaller bowl pipes. You'll find that your pipe time will probably be more limited (for a while at least)...😉 But as I'm sure you've already learned, it's worth it...
So, meant to say that the name Milo comes from one of my favorite children's books (which I didn't discover until College, go figure, but that's also a long story) called The Phantom Tollbooth. It's the name of the main character, a bored kid that travels to a fun fantasy land.
Atticus was picked out by my wife. Contrary to what one might think, it didn't come from To Kill A Mockingbird, she just liked the name.
And Quintin is a family name, from both my grandfather and uncle. It almost became my name, too.
Also, I learned a lot from @PappyJoe when he was giving advice to @Michael308 when he had his daughter, about being a pipe smoker and having a baby. I wear specific clothes when I smoke my pipe anyway, so they wont be around my son. I also wash my face and brush my teeth after coming in, so the smoke on me doesn't linger. When I told my son's pediatrician that this was my process, she didn't put up a fuss one bit, and seemed impressed at my carefulness.
@thebadgerpiper Just a sidenote: My grandkids are 6 and 9, and have never seen me smoke a pipe. They've seen my pipes, but that's it. Also, when children in the neighborhood walk up to say hi to my wife and me, I immediately put my pipe down until our conversations are finished and they've left. A few parents have commented to me on how thoughtful it is... Just sayin'...
@thebadgerpiper At least you still have your pets. My kids were allergic to cats. As was I - so we were dog people ... with the occasional feral cat that remained outdoors.
@thebadgerpiper I have been scolded by my wife for having a pipe in front of the kids more than once. Now I try to squeeze them in late at night away from the youngsters.
@KA9FFJ; You are a good man. I'm afraid I don't follow you example with neighborhood kids or my granddaughters. My babies used to give me static, but now they just go with Papa ain't perfect, but he loves us. I am what I am!
Most recent I checked, Delta was back up to a Category 3 storm but will drop down to a weak Category 2 storm before it crosses land. Hurricane Laura made landfall about 20 miles west of Lake Charles and devastated the area going inland for about 45 miles. Delta looks to be making landfall about 30 miles east of Lake Charles and is moving faster.
That is based on the last reports I've seen from the National Hurricane Center. The big question is when the storm will start weakening. South Louisiana has been having some cooler than expected weather for the past two weeks and that has dropped the surface temperature of the water a little. The problem is no one has an answer as to how much that's going to affect the storm. The hurricane center is also still uncertain about what westerly wind shear will do.
That's good for Lake Charles because the slower a hurricane moves, the more damage it does. The faster it moves inland, the faster it will weaken. The other "good" news is that if it stays on the expected track, that part of Louisiana is mostly marsh and empty land (I think) with a few small towns between the Gulf and I-10. That will help weaken the storm also.
All that being said, that is my interpretation of what I'm seeing on the National Hurricane Center website and based on my past experience in both living on the Gulf coast and spending nine of my 21 years in the Coast Guard on the Gulf Coast and in Florida. (You want a thrill ride? Try driving a van into a hurricane.)
edit: According to the weather channel, the projected track of Delta is only 15 miles east of Laura which when in closer to Lake Charles than reported.
Little wind. Little rain. The brunt of the storm was about 180 miles west of us. Our son over there is without power again and lost about a five foot section of privacy fence. But other than that, he's good.
Glad your OK @PappyJoe out here in SoCal it's all about fires and earthquakes. We haven't had a bad earthquake in awhile so I should probably shut up, especially with 2020 being such a gem of a year lol.
@ghostsofpompeii , @buflosab NO! don't erase it. People have to learn from their mistakes. Saving history is the only way to make sure stupid stuff doesn't happen again and again.
@RockyMountainBriar I agree. Some of the problems we are seeing today are because people have chosen to forget history. Forgetting history leads to making the same mistakes over and over again. It also creates arguments that would be quickly settled if people would actually look at history.

Nah, that’s an old wives tale. My dad smoked everyday around us kids, even cooped up in the car with the windows up. 😬

@thebadgerpiper having kids is a blessing which completes your life and add wonderful joy! Great news everyone is well.
What's the latest on Delta?

May it be the will of God that you be granted safe passage in this time of concern.
May you be safe in the place you dwell, and may you find continued peace.
What?

Only concerned for your welfare. Glad it missed you.
