By the way, Skip Elliot, the owner of The Briary in Homewood, AL (part of Birmingham) also is a pipe carver who does some good work. This is his Retro Billiard.
@opipeman I've generally make a stop there once a year when traveling between Louisiana and Texas. In addition to all the really nice pipes he has on display, The Briary has one of the best selection of tinned tobacco I've seen.
I have to limit myself to spend under $100 every time I go there.
@opipeman Yep. I'm a product of my upbringing. I won't say I'm a miser or penny pincher, but I have lived through times where sometimes every penny counts. After I got married and we had our first child, I had to start learning to put family needs before wants and fun.
Now that we are both in our 70s and not worried too much about money, I still find myself asking if I really need something before I buy it.
@PappyJoe; We have very similar financial experiences. As a Firefighter I worked two part-time jobs. Now I can afford a new pipe now and then, but I ask myself, how long will I be around to enjoy it. I'll be 80 the first week of March and I have more tobac than I'll ever smoke and more pipes than I really need. Like you, my past experiences make me feel a little guilty to indulge myself. Maybe it's a little silly, but I can't seem to shake it off.
@opipeman I just turned 71 and I probably have collected more than I will smoke through. I'll still buy an occasional tin of something that has come out and I want to try but I just can't justify buying a new pipe every time I see one I like.
In fact, I am weeding out the estate pipes I bought and restored. I have about five I'm about to get rid of and then I may commission a new pipe from this one carver I know.
My wife tells me it's simple. Sell and/or give away 2 to 3 pipes for every one new one I acquire. Eventually my collection will be to a point where she will be able to walk by my pipes without giving me the stink eye...🙄
In today's mail I received this pipe I acquired on ebay. I threw out a minimum bid and I'll be darn if I didn't win it. It's an HS Studio freehand. I'll be trying it out today...
@motie2 Interesting. I just did a bowl this afternoon and it seems to be behaving like normal uncoated briar. I also detected nothing but the 1Q I was smoking... so far so good...🤞🏻
I have just divested myself of three pipes I picked up at junktique shops and malls. This is not because I have too many pipes and I'm getting old. It's because I have made the conscious decision that I won't buy a new pipe until I thin the "herd" so to speak.
As I explained to my wife, what I will receive for letting the three pipes go will be used to help purchase a new pipe.
The pipes leaving are: 1. A bent Mastercraft 2. A Royal Sovereign 3. Unmarked basket pipe.
Introducing the Peretti’s Virgin Deluxe line of pipes. Crafted from rare, vintage Algerian Briar & available in a range of 21 smaller shapes, they are lightweight, cool-smoking, and elegantly finished with no fills. Guaranteed to provide a cool, sweet smoke at an incredible price.

This is his Retro Billiard.
Somehow, I could travel to The Briary. The problem is I wouldn't have any money left to get home.

You have amazing self control.

I admire a man with a plan.

HS Studio pipes are remarkably legit, especially in light of how many Chinese pipes are crap (most of ‘em).
One criticism that seems widespread is that HS Studio pipes often have a non-soluble bowl coating.
Interesting.
