By the way, Skip Elliot, the owner of The Briary in Homewood, AL (part of Birmingham) also is a pipe carver who does some good work. This is his Retro Billiard.
@opipeman I've generally make a stop there once a year when traveling between Louisiana and Texas. In addition to all the really nice pipes he has on display, The Briary has one of the best selection of tinned tobacco I've seen.
I have to limit myself to spend under $100 every time I go there.
@opipeman Yep. I'm a product of my upbringing. I won't say I'm a miser or penny pincher, but I have lived through times where sometimes every penny counts. After I got married and we had our first child, I had to start learning to put family needs before wants and fun.
Now that we are both in our 70s and not worried too much about money, I still find myself asking if I really need something before I buy it.
@PappyJoe; We have very similar financial experiences. As a Firefighter I worked two part-time jobs. Now I can afford a new pipe now and then, but I ask myself, how long will I be around to enjoy it. I'll be 80 the first week of March and I have more tobac than I'll ever smoke and more pipes than I really need. Like you, my past experiences make me feel a little guilty to indulge myself. Maybe it's a little silly, but I can't seem to shake it off.
@opipeman I just turned 71 and I probably have collected more than I will smoke through. I'll still buy an occasional tin of something that has come out and I want to try but I just can't justify buying a new pipe every time I see one I like.
In fact, I am weeding out the estate pipes I bought and restored. I have about five I'm about to get rid of and then I may commission a new pipe from this one carver I know.
My wife tells me it's simple. Sell and/or give away 2 to 3 pipes for every one new one I acquire. Eventually my collection will be to a point where she will be able to walk by my pipes without giving me the stink eye...🙄

Somehow, I could travel to The Briary. The problem is I wouldn't have any money left to get home.

I admire a man with a plan.
