Congratulations with joining the "I'm a dumbass" club! Mine fell off my truck bumper a few weeks back and a dump truck ran over it, so I joined the club then--on the bright side, membership is free (less the loss of a pipe of course). 🤣
I just laughed out loud. Thanks @opipeman and @vtgrad2003 I'm pretty sure I'm a card carrying member of said club, but it's nice to be in such esteemed company. 😂
@mfresa easy come easy go, there is always room in the rack for another pipe. @RockyMountainBriar it smoked pretty darn good. The draw was great on it, but in all honesty I can't say it smoked dramatically better or different than other brands I have tried. I guess I wouldn't spacificaly run out looking for one. The little filters were pretty inexpensive, but most of the pipes I do have don't use any filters with the exception of one or two.
Question: Is there a general consensus out there that cross grain pipes with a lot of birdseye on the bowl get a hell of a lot hotter than pipes with straight grain? I just noticed that with a pipe i was smoking then I smoked my other cross grains and they also seem to get a lot hotter...anyone find the same thing?
@vtgrad2003 I have not noticed a difference per grain orientation, but I will pay more attention. I do have some pipes that smoke hot, one in particular, the Elektra that has the thin walked cracked out bowl that I repaired with a bowl lining of chalk and egg white. The stuff is basically ceramic, so I guess it would be expected that it smokes like a clay…especially since the original briar walls were reamed so out thinly with extended use by it’s previous companion/s. If I remember correctly, it does not have a good cross, flame, or straight grain, just bland.
@vtgrad2003 Although I can see where logic would dictate heat might possibly conduct more easily following the grain patterns and escape through the birds eyes, I personally have not had that experience. Not dispelling it, just haven't noticed it. I'm sure someone, somewhere has researched that possibility, but never ran across it... yet...🤔
Speaking of birds eye pipes; so there is a member of the Chicago pipe club who is a rather low key guy but who owns some of the most magnificent briar pipes I've ever seen.
Last Saturday at the CPCC ( Chicao Pipe Collectors) meeting he had a few more of his pipes and I took pictures to share with you guys as they were truly fantastic.
Now this pipe which is pretty dam big has the most symmetrical grain I have ever seen,( I never ask what they cost) but given the rarity of briar like this, well you can guess, its insane.
The only thing I lament on this pipe is the fact the stain is the usual baby shit brown that so many of these great pieces of briar are stained with. Needs a contrasting Finnish in my opinion.
I'm thinking of getting an Alfred Dunhill (new or estate unsmoked). Possibly this one, I dont know. All I know is, I want at least one in my collection and my wife told me it wouldn't be an issue if I did.
@vtgrad2003@opipeman thanks to both of you, you just made me laugh out loud. And I am pretty sure I joined the I'm a dumbass club a long time ago, but I'm honored to be in such distinguished company. 😂

That should buff out, without much trouble!
Yep, that one is done. I wouldn’t try to fix it, but @KA9FFJ might? His skills have brought some frankenpipes back from the dead.😬
How did you like that E.A. Carey?
