@Zouave One of the first five estate pipes I bought was a Comoy’s Sunrise Lovat. It’s was and is a great smoking pipe. Nice looking Canadian, I hope it smokes as well for you as my Lovat does for me🙂
@RockyMountainBriar thanks! Looking forward to getting it into the rotation. I actually won it from Jean Panzers YouTube page. He does a give away thing each month with Bishops Pipes. I somehow managed to get lucky again.
Well done @addamsruspipe There's a thread here titled "pipe refinishing" that displays many refinished, refurbished, restored and reworked pipes done by our brothers here at TPL. It would be great if you would add your beautiful pipe to that thread. Hopefully you took some before/after pics. We all would LOVE to see them as well... Again, great job. 👍🏻
I found the correct size accoutrement I envisioned for my Peterson Halloween 2022. A small sterling silver arachnid🙂. It was a post type earring that I trimmed the post a bit, drilled a shallow tiny hole in my pipe😳 and used a drop of cyanoacrylate to hold it in place. More to come…….
Here is the next accoutrement I found for my Halloween pipe. It‘s a Sterling Silver pendant that I want to turn into a wind-cap/windscreen. I want a small silver collar with a ring and a short piece of chain to attach it to the shank so as not to lose it. I need to find a silversmith to attach something? to the bottom of the web to hold the cap in place on the top of the bowl. I have some antique sterling silver wind caps that just slide over the outside of the bowl…maybe just solder the web to the top of an actual wind-cap…..or just add a thin trim ring to the bottom of the web?
@RockyMountainBriar I like the idea brother, but I'm not letting you take me down that path on my green Christmas pipe... You've already made me do more work than I wanted to because of your orange one...😏
@RockyMountainBriar man it's too bad your not closer! Looks like you could make a small ring out of thin flat stock and tack the web to it no problem. As long as it's sterling it would solder just fine. The other option would be tack three or four 1/4 inch silver wires to the bottom of the web, and bend them out slightly so they grab the interior of the bowl. They might heat up more that way though? If you really wanted to go nuts, I could make you a golden spider attached to the chain!
@Zouave Yep, I think a ring would be best. I’m not sure sterling silver ears (which I contemplated also) would take the bending/re-bending abuse that is sure to happen. When you mentioned “wire”, an idea for the shank ring “popped”…a simple, heavy gauge wire with a loop would work and probably be easier than a band. I have talked with a silversmith here in Billings, they have some kind of machine that “lasers” or “spot welds” silver electronically. Have you heard of or seen one @Zouave?
@RockyMountainBriar yes, at the last place I worked we had a Laser welder. It does work good for most joint solders but it is a very topical and brittle joint. It may work good for a wind cap. You don't want a lot of flexing on a lasered joint. Myself, I would probably use conventional solder for the job. It does look like a fun project. Im jealous I'm not out your way.
If I had the correct tools and solder I could probably do it myself. I can solder near anything else that isn’t precious metal, although I’d probably melt the web😳
I scored a pair of estate Peterson Deluxe pipes recently. I have already refurbished them. They were used, but not overly abused, mainly heavy rim lava. I didn’t even have to refinish them, just clean and buff. My kind of restoration, no stinky, sticky, tar like goo left over from nasty Latakia grossness. I’m pretty sure they were smoked with “Prince Albert”. After restoring hundreds of pipes, I think I have figured out that “Prince Albert” is the “common” tobacco that leaves a generally thin, very hard cake. I have yet to smoke any myself, it’s surprisingly tough to find a pouch around here nowadays.
@mfresa Actually I prefer a fishtail bit. I would rather torch my tongue than the roof of my mouth. I kind of smoke P-Lips with the pipe angled up a little to keep the smoke off of the roof of my mouth. I do believe that a tapered stem airway, if it has one. The original as designed P-Lips have a tapered airway which I think do smoke better, but many don’t retain this feature. The P-Lip itself is not part of the “better smoke” experience in my opinion. I have an old Peterson with a NAP stem which I really like, but it is made of amber so I don’t smoke it much for fear of breaking it, again🙁. I need to make, or have a NAP stem made by Silver Gray, to give the NAP a well informed opinion of it’s true smoke-ability. I think they are very rare because they are so difficult to machine, otherwise there might be more out there. The NAP spreads the smoke out across the tongue/mouth and reduces the smoke path concentration “hot spot”, thus providing a smoother more flavorful smoke. I really need to get one and put it through it’s paces.

That is a beauty. I've always been a fan of Canadian shaped pipes.

That is an outstanding job on an antique pipe. It looks brand new.
Can't tell for sure, would you consider that pipe a blowfish or what?
Really like it...
I think I would go with “Embellished Bent Ball with Fancy Stemwork”😬

Maybe I will have to send it your way🙂
