What is the story behind your user name?
(I've seen this topic on other forums and thought I would ask it here.)
Why or how did you pick your user name?
Mine is relatively easy. My first name is Joe and 8 out of 9 grandkids call me Pappy (#9 is only 5 months old so she doesn't talk). On another forum I'm know as PappyMac because it would let me use PappyJoe for some reason. The Pappymac is because all I use are Mac computers and Apple products.

I have heard your name floated a bit by the good guys at The Country Squire Radio Show.
Mine is simple too, my name is Jay and I smoke pipes.
Take care.
The name comes from the alien race in "The Mote in God's Eye," by Nivens and Pournelle......
Back in the mid to late 70s' I was in a band called Vesuvius. After finally establishing ourselves and appearing as one of 11 finalists on the WKQX Hometown Album (a contest sponsored by a local Chicagoland radio station) the band was in the process of negotiating a record deal with a small independent label (which has since become a major player in the music industry); when to our surprise an integral member of the band unexpectedly quit, leaving the remaining members scrambling for a replacement. And as auditions for a qualified replacement proved fruitless, we found ourselves making lame excuses to the record exec as to why we were unable to meet our commitments (like rescheduling booked studio time). After a terse phone conversation with the frustrated exec his offer was rescinded. The remaining members were devastated. After years of working our way to this position we let a chance of a lifetime slip through our fingers. In frustration the remaining band members amicably agreed to part ways. Two days later I received an irate phone call from the parent of one of the members, informing me her son had literally suffered a mental breakdown and was taken to a local hospital. In the end he required several months of in-patient care at a local institution, and months of after-care treatment. We were all broken in spirit - but not to that extent. I sold all my equipment vowing never to perform with a band again.
About 20 years later when it became possible for an individual to create an inexpensive home project studio and record a professional sounding product I opted back into the music field - but keeping my vow, remaining a solo artist under the moniker "Ghosts Of Pompeii". I chose the name because the devastation from the 'volcano' Vesuvius left in it's wake a city of ghosts - and in a sense the 'band' Vesuvius had devastating effects on the members of the band, who in one way or another became a ghost of their former selves by the ordeal. So when thinking of a name for this new musical project of mine I surmised that we too had become victims of Vesuvius. Thankfully, not quite as literal as the stone encrusted residents of Pompeii. But many of us retreated into a shell of our own, though not lava based.
I liked the sound of Ghosts Of Pompeii more so than Ghosts Of Vesuvius, so stuck with that as the name of my project. And since there is a prejudice in the progressive rock community (my target market) against the preverbal 'one man band' project I decided to use the plural Ghosts instead of singular Ghost, as a bit of a ruse and quell those fears - hoping to win them over with the quality of the music before they figured it was just one 'ghost' and not a whole damn spook house full of ghosts. That's my story and I'll sticking to it.
But, what's in a name? Your story rings as true as mine....
Pleased to meet ya!
