The above is well worth the time of any aromatic smoker. The introduction is well written, and while you’ll recognize many of the recommendations, there are some interesting newcomers.
Love all the Captain Black products and find the comparisons to Lane bulk blends pretty interesting. I tend to buy my bulk tobacco from Sutliff so I have no reference to the Lane blends mentioned. But I do have a question for those who smoke the Lane blends? It's been my experience when smoking any of the Captain Black blends my mouth seems to dry out (cotton mouth) more often than other aromatic blends I smoke. So it's imperative that I have something to drink while smoking any Captain Black blends. And yes, it goes without saying that a beverage of any sort makes the smoking experience more enjoyable. But in the case of Captain Black products a cup of coffee, tea, or glass of water, soda or some other libation is essential to moisten the pallet after a few minutes of smoking. So my question to members who smoke the above mentioned Lane blends, do you experience a similar 'cotton mouth' problem?
That said - I still enjoy all the Captain Black blends with the exception of Cherry. I even enjoy Grape.
@ghostsofpompeii I smoke Royal, Original, & Dark, but I can’t say I have noticed that. I will have to pay more attention to that. I almost loaded Royal this evening too….maybe later🙂
@ghostsofpompeii It's an easy explanation. Your mouth is watering just thinking about partaking in a Captain Black blend. Once you start loading up, the watering stops which results in dry mouth while enjoying those blends...😏
@ghostsofpompeii; Now that you mention it, I guess I have noticed that with Capt. Black Tobacs. I have experienced that with other blends as well. I generally have some water handy when I smoke my pipe, even if I'm doing yard work. I never focused on the issue before. I do love Capt. Black Blends and have for a long time.
@motie2 Very interesting about Captain Bob's blend. I'll have to put that one on the list. @ghostsofpompeii I also enjoy , occasionally, CBs Grape blend. Couldn't make a steady diet of it, but it is a refreshing change now and then...
The quote is usually attributed to John Wayne’s character in the 1939 western Stagecoach. Additionally, in John Steinbeck's The Grapes of Wrath (1939) the character Jim Casey says, "I know this - a man got to do what he got to do.”
Boswell's aromatics are proving to be a real game changer for me. My Secret Santa bought me a sampler pack of eight Boswell aromatic blends ( one ounce each ) and a four ounce tin of a ninth. Every one of them (even the two cherry flavored blends) is superior to the aromatics I have been smoking, with the exception of a single Rattray's aromatic, Caribbean Dream. I.m sticking with my Balkans (Magnum Opus, White Knight, and Balkan Sasieni), but I'm giving up Barbados Plantation..... (I know; you're shocked, shocked......... well, so am I.)
Now I need to plan a three hour trip to Chambersburg PA.
@motie2 I wholeheartedly agree with you on the Boswell aromatics. Both their Christmas Blend and Cupcake are outstanding. Since ordering the two I've alternated between them and smoked nothing else. I also mixed equal amounts of Christmas Blend and Cupcake, creating a bowlful of holiday delight. I plan on mixing up another small batch and adding a pinch of Scotty's Trout Stream for an extra kick of butterscotch.
Friends, if you smoke aromatics and have not tried Boswell's blends, you need to browse https://boswellpipes.com/boswell-tobacco-list/ and pick something out. (The last third of the page lists their English blends, about which I know nothing, except that folks seem to regard their Northwoods as a place filler for Frog Morton's Cellar. Countryside also gets good notices).I've now tried five of the aros and they are - all five -- better than the aros I had been smoking, mostly from Lane and Sutliff. I recommend the sampler https://boswellpipes.com/product/boswell-aromatic-sampler/ which includes 1 oz. of Boswell's Best, No Bite DeLite, Cherry Smash, Pennsylvania Dutch Treat, Blend 35, Piper's Pleasure, Sweet & Mild, and Raspberry Cream. My Secret Santa also bought me their Rum River which blew my mind. I am sold, 100%.

Upon reflection, I'll second that... (more or less) 😏

Have you tried C&D’s Captain Bob’s Blend?

I smoked some CB Royal last night. I did not notice any “cotton mouth”.
Nice display of Pipes and Tobacs, Brother.

I wonder if that's where the old saying got started, "A mans got to do what a mans got to do"?
