@Wilhelm You had an awesome find in that lot. All "no longer in production," and have not been in a while. I did a double take when I saw the label names. Rare finds, indeed.
@Michael308 Mike I'm sorry it took so long for me to respond to your question. Somehow I missed this post. I find all three to be excellent - but my favorite of the three is Officer's Club. There are just small nuanced differences between the blends but I'd highly recommend them all. When buying them from Pipes & Cigars check to see if they still have the Rum Punch offer in the tins sampler section. They offer all three at a reduced price. Just got the new catalog today and the price listed for each tin is $8.99 - making it about the same price as the sampler.
Just ordered another pound of Scotty's Trout Stream, along with 4 oz. of Russ Fudge Cake, 3 oz. of Sutliff Christmas Spice (a nice all year blend), and 3 tins of Lane Limited Wild Hare. My original plan was to only order the Wild Hare because it was marked down in the close-out section to $6.79 a tin ... so I also decided I'd take advantage of the $39.00 a pound offer for the Trout Stream which was still in effect (since I've already gone through half a pound within a month and a half). And that's when you find yourself in a quandary ... your total is nearing $60.00 ... by spending an additional $19.00 more you'll get free shipping. So I found myself adding and subtracting other blends to get as close to $79.00 as possible. Which is why I ended up with the Christmas Spice and Fudgecake. Contemplated the Brigadier Black blends but my numbers were not cooperating. In the end I got the order to $79.85 and figured I couldn't get any closer than that. So now I have to find some extra room in my cellar for jars of Trout Stream and Fudgecake. Chances are the Trout Stream will be smoked up before summer arrives.
Now I added the $5.00 European Vacation Sampler from Pipes & Cigars to my list. 1 pouch of John Bull, one pouch of C'est La Vie, and one pouch of Erin Go Bragh to the list.
I finally found some SG “Black XX” in stock, so I got the “big bag” and had to add some G.L.Pease “Stonehenge Flake” and some other extras to make the minimum shipping (those bastards..they got me). Love that “Stonehenge Flake”, now if I can just be quick enough to get some S.G. “Cabbies Mixture” the next time it surfaces🤨
@RockyMountainBriar - Tried some of the "SG Black XX" for the first time the other night at a pipe club meeting in Nashville. It was wonderful. Thick as tar. It had a nic hit from Satan's bowel. Man, was it good! The last two tins I picked up were a tin of "Holger Danske Original Orange Mellow" cause I wanted something new and sweet, and a tin of "Mac Baren Mixture Flake". I was looking for "HH Old Dark Fire" which they were out of, but when I saw the (Nov. 2012) date on the back of the Mixture Flake I just had to pull the trigger.
@OlePops Yea, I have to smoke that Black XX in a teeny-tiny pipe. I love it though. I wrote (what I consider) a mildly entertaining review on tobaccoreviews.com for Black XX, in case anyone is interested. It is under my nom de guerre "Ambush1964".
@RockyMountainBriar - That was freakin' hilarious! I wish I had been there with you and your brother. The odd thing about it is I was with my brother the other day when I tried it for the first time. He has been daring me to try it for some time and I have been taking your brother's attitude about it. He has been slightly reserved ie) more subdued about it as you may have been in regards to the nic hit. The 4 of us together would have been a powdercharge!
@OlePops I would probably have had my Bulleit Bourbon on hand The only Rye I have is Old Overholt. I think it is billed as the oldest maker of Rye Whiskey still going strong.
@RockyMountainBriar - Now Ole'Pops hears you'a screamin'! I'm a Bulliet Rye man, mysep. It's the best wet thing you can put in your mouth at my age...(Im'a thinkin' that last statement over). At any rate, Isn't the oldest rye still going Sazerac? Bat Masterson used to drink it. Well, it don't matter cause Ole'Pops drinks BULLIET!
@OlePops Sazerac is a mixed drink...maybe the oldest cocktail. It is Bourbon/Rye Whiskey, Absinthe (which, until recently, was banned in the US since about 1915?), Angostura Bitters, a bit of water and a touch of superfine sugar.
@RockyMountainBriar - It's also a brand of Rye Whiskey originally from Now Orleans, LA. They just bought property in my home town to build a distillery.
Old Overholt is considered the oldest continually made or maintained rye whiskey made in the United States. The West Overton, PA distillery where it was first made dates back to the year 1810.
The first Sazerac cocktail was indeed made in New Orleans using a Sazerac brandy from France, Green Fairy Absinthe and Peychaud's Bitters. The recipe wasn't switched to rye whiskey until around 1873.
I'm not sure when Sazerac started distilling its brand of rye whiskey but it could be argued that there were many small distilleries around the country in the 1800s, and the Sazerac Coffee House, where the cocktail was first created, may have been one of them.
