@RockyMountainBriar I suspected I knew what the banana belt would be, but I had to look it up as I had never heard the term and Montana used together.
Used to spend a lot of time in a similar area in the mountains on the Olympic Peninsula of Washington. The town of Sequim to be specific; considerably less rain and snow than the surrounding area and the temperature is much more moderate.
Don't know what elevation you live at, but snow in early October is only something I want if I'm out hunting. But I seem to recall you don't have anyone to complain when you smoke your pipe in the house, LUCKY
Autumn is clearly the best time of the year for an outdoors smoke. Summer and Winter can be tough. Springtime here in the Midwest is a bit touch and go ... either it's raining or still a tad too cold. But the Autumn is that Goldilocks Zone ... just right. Today I pulled out my Peterson Jekyll & Hyde pipe and smoked a bowl of Sutliff Rum and Maple. Not one of my usual Autumn blends - but it hit the spot. Watched a fox acting a bit strange on the road. Kept my distance because I wasn't sure if it was playing or infected with rabies. Normally I try enticing wildlife to approach with bits of food ... but this little guy didn't look like he had all his marbles. A sure sign of rabies.
First time trying Decatur Dark Sweet Rum, out of loyalty to Sutliff Sunset Rum which I buy frequently, I would say DDSR is a blend Equal to Sutliff SR. Of course Rum taste or strength of Rum taste does not equal BP. I would be interested to hear if any members have compared Sutliff Sunset Rum to Decatur Dark Sweet Rum.
Golden Extra in the Roma poker I got when I went nuts at P&C, spent $100, and got a free pipe. It smokes pretty well, and I am finally ready to let it rest for a while before I slip it into the rotation. It was not happy with Lane RR,which is my go-to break in tobacco, nor with PS NDC,which I also use. GE smokes very well, however.
@mapletop Billings is pretty low elevation for Montana...officially it is 3123 feet. I think the sandstone rims/cliffs that partially surround Billings proper are another 80-100 feet higher. The Billings Logan International Airport sits atop the rims on the North end. Also, although there is no one to complain about smoking in the house (except myself and Scrat), I rarely smoke in the house, maybe once or twice a year. I usually end up smoking in the shop/garage when I am working on something. It is insulated, but not permanently heated. I can start my propane space heater (fan forced and noisy), or my propane patio heater (quiet, passive, convection/reflective heat). I can get away with the tall patio heater inside the shop because the shop has a 12ft sheet rocked ceiling.
@judandhispipe Just curious, What did the Roma "Not Like" about the Lane RR and PS NDC, that the Golden Extra Flake "fixed". I am a newbie (6+ years piping...wow...just realized how fast time flies at this age) and was wondering how performance differs from pipe/tobacco combo's? I have not smoked enough to really get a handle on the nuances.
So I'm having a bowl of Bengal slices before a dinner I make once a year driven by availability of produce from my garden, in this case the Okra, Been frosting 3 nights a week for the past two.
While I cant take credit for the meat in this Jambalaya, the cayenne, sweet peppers, onions, scallions, garlic jalapenos, okra, garlic with the exception of the celery are from my garden.
Londy3, wish you were here, I think you'd like it.
@motie2, Your welcome, Unfortunately it seems I'm only capable of mini reviews, I really admire members that can go in depth concerning various blends they have tried. While not making excuses, always have taste and smell situations relating to sinus problems. Hence the lackluster reviews. One thing I was pretty sure of, your mind would not be changed trying Decatur Dark Sweet Rum over BP.
We have temporarily achieved Fall temperatures. The past two days the high temp has been in the 70s and the humidity has fallen into the 60s. Yesterday I opened a 2017 Jar of Rattray's Exotic Orange and a 2015 jar of Rattray's Winter Edition 2015. Getting my holiday smoking going.
Our local B&M where he hold our pipe club meetings had it in stock just last week. I have two more 100 gram jars sitting in my cellar. I'm currently trying to find the Rattray's Winter 2018.
Starting this glorious Friday, a day off, with some celebratory Cornell & Diehl Star of the East. The Red Sox are champions of the American League and going to the World Series!

Thanks for the mini review. That answered my question. Much appreciated....

I appreciate your remarks, above. Yes, I'm still looking for a rum blend that rivals (or beats) BP.
