Pipe storage

Hey folks...I am starting to accumulate a few pipes and it's a little cumbersome keeping them in socks in my desk drawer with my Tobacco jars. Just hard to find the one you want without getting them all out. Sooooo, how do you store your pipes so they don't get banged up and you have easy access? I am not a big fan of these wooden stands. To me, they look a little cheesy. I want a practical, affordable solution with good looks. Any ideas??

@Londy3 The red one I bought at a store named "At Home". The month after I bought this one, they had blue police call boxes like on Doctor Who. They were $49.
The rustic, fence board one I made myself.
The last one I paid $25 for at a junk shop posing as an antique/collectible shop. The glass is etched with Sherlock Holmes smoking a Calabash with Big Ben in the background.

@Londy3 I'm afraid I use wooden pipe racks as well. And even have the exact same one, with Sherlock Holmes etched in the glass as PappyJoe. For a while I kept both the Peterson Dracula and Dr. Jekyll & Mr. Hyde in their original boxes on display on my book shelf alongside the pipes in the pipe rack. But thought they deserved to be on display as well and not cooped up in a cardboard box.

@PappyJoe I see you have Edward G Robinson blend on your shelf. How is it? I considered buying some just because I like the actor and wanted to add the tin to my collection. It's one of the few really old blends you'll find in vintage advertisements that's till for sale other than OTC blends like Half And Half, Velvet, and Prince Albert.

Here's a new cabinet I acquired a couple months ago. I really like these older pipe cabinets that are designed for smallish pipes, and best of all, I gave less than $70 for this one. It was made by the Hansen Clock Company. I scored this one on Ebay.

Hand made by me! I like it better than the ones i seen on the net. Cost me zero dollars as i made it from left over oak from reworking the stair treads at home.

@trhoton Excellent job. Why buy when you can make something just as good or better. You can customize it to fit your collection exactly. I bought one off EBAY because it held 28 pipes then gave it to my son so he could slot several for easy access to the longer stemmed pipes. Some of the older pipe racks had the holes in them and were shorter, making it difficult to get a pipe in without removing the stem completely or turning it so you could jigger it in place. That's why I like the slots instead. Your looks pretty damn sturdy as well.

Made this one out of a old gun cabinet still need to cover the shelves and add a few more right now it olny holds 21 which leaves pipe racks sitting on desk on top and around my sun room.

@ghostsofpompeii I rarely keep any of the ones I make I have about three that ended up being mine mainly because of imperfections. I do how ever have about 40 pipes that I have bought. I keep the ones I am I am thinking about selling on ebay on my mantle until my wife has finished the sleeves for them.

Sorry for the late reply here fellas, started a new job about 10 days ago and have been swamped.

As I've posted here before, I have repurposed an old TV Entertainment System/Cabinet into my Briar n Baccy Storage/Display.

In the corner shelves I've used both the individual and three pipe stands from Decatur that I picked up at an antique store.

I also picked up a couple of dozen inexpensive chrome plated plastic stands from china, they work fine.

I'm in the process of converting a tall thin CD tower into a pipe rack. I picked it up at a thrift store for $5.00. Used a 1 1/4 forstner bit on the shelves and adding a stem rack to each shelf using dowel rod. It will hold 5 pipes per shelf for a total of 30 pipes and still have room at the bottom for small tobacco storage. My only cost, besides the $5.00, will be the cost of the dowel rod. I don't know how to post pics yet, but if/when I do I will post the completed project...

@KA9FFJ -- What a great idea; I've got an old CD cabinet in the garage. I never thought of converting it.

But first, I need to get more than my seven pipes.
