Theory #2 -- For folks with a patch over their right eye (or missing a right eye -- my father's aunt had an empty socket and it FREAKED me out as a child) because the smoke would not irritate a covered or missing eye. <<Of course, that's just my opinion. I could be wrong.>> ~ Dennis Miller Ver. 1.0
@motie2 That ALIEN pipe is friggin' unbelievable! I tried looking for a price on it but can't find it at all. Did find all the pictures on the link - but it's possibly a 'one off' created by the pipe maker and not for sale. If it was it would probably be out of my league unless someone set up a 'Go Fund Me Account' to get Mr.Ghosts an expensive pipe. And that's about as likely as setting up an account to get Hitler carved into "Mt. Rushmore".
<<"Notary sojac," like the Bible Code and most Republican dogma, has no meaning. The words were just a nonsense couplet thought up by artist Bill Holman and used at random times in his cartoon "Smokey Stover." But, again like the Bible Code, etc., it's survived longer than a lot of other things that made more sense.
"Smokey Stover" was probably the most screwball comic strip ever published. It was begun in 1935 and distributed by the Chicago Tribune/New York Daily News Syndicate. The cartoon was famous for putting little sight gags and puns in almost every frame, including the words "foo", "1506 Nix Nix" and the aforementioned "notary sojac," all of which Holman refused to explain.
Actually, Holman is better remembered for "foo." Stover drove a truck called the "Foomobile" and the word was later picked up and used by Bob Clampett in some of his cartoon work for Warner Brothers. There is some evidence that the phrase "foo-fighters," in reference to pilots investigating alleged UFOs during World War II, can be traced back to Stover. It may have also influenced the formation of the military acronymn "fubar" (fucked up beyond all recognition). Back in DOS shareware days, old fogeys may remember, "foo" and "bar" were often the default variables used by developers to illustrate how you'd insert an argument into command line input.
Holman finally retired in 1973 and, going against the grain of letting another artist take over his work, retired the strip as well. He died in 1987. No one could have done it better anyway.>>
So many beautiful pipes - but most of them seem to be one-off creations, and not for sale. And if they do happen to be for sale they're probably too rich for my blood. But we can dream.
Seeking info on pipes stamped, "Bruyere Garantie."
Google had the obvious -- "Guaranteed Briar" (or "Genuine Briar"?) -- and links to anecdotes and recalled histories. Nothing solid.
P&C opined, "Bruyere-Garantie Pipes--In recent years, we've seen a lot of nostalgia for pipes along the lines of ones that were popular in the 50s and 60s, especially the small, straight, lightweight briars from France. We recently came across some decades-old French pipes that look like they came out of a late 50s Father's Day ad. These were almost certainly made before 1970, and the briar is fully cured and super-light. They come in a variety of classic shapes and feature golden stain with a simulated charred appearance on the top third. They also have faux-bakelite stems. The package gives the appearance of a well-smoked meerschaum...."
http://pipesmagazine.com/forums/topic/what-does-bruyere-garantie-stand-for -- "Lots of French and German pipes, even pre-war ones, were given the label "Bruyere Garantie." At least the ones I've seen for sale were listed as being from the 1920s and 30s. But I suspect that is a genuine date for those because many of them had horn stems, which are much rarer in post-war pipes and some of them definitely had an Art Deco/Art Nouveau look about them as well as old-fashioned rounded buttons."
I found the claim that St. Claude, France "was the briar pipe manufacturing centre of the world."

That double-barrel pipe would be perfect for blend stacking. You could get six different aromatic blends stacked in there.
The other pipe is for smoking around corners.

And what an ALIEN might look like after using it.
