New pipe smoker starting a wet and rainy day in Chicago off with my Carter Hall in a Rossi Rubino. I decided I wasn’t going to overlook the OTC tobaccos. I have to say, it was really nice and light. Most other tobaccos I’ve tried are heavy aromatics and tend to bite me quite a bit while I still work on keeping my bowl cool. This was easy going and stayed lit. Flavor didn’t blow me away but I really did enjoy the mildness of it. Also, gave the Frank method a go that seemed to help as well. Coffee was a etheopian from a local roasters, the pipe made the light roasted coffee seem extra spicy and super enjoyable. Unfortunately, it’s been a deluge of bad news regarding the health of a couple of family members this past week and it was really nice to take a moment from the chaos to enjoy this bowl and a coffee.
@PaulKeith — Sorry about the bad report on the family members. A nice bowl of something easy to smoke can help take your mind off of things for a while. Carter Hall is probably my favorite OTC blend. It also is good for blending with some of those heavier aros you’ve been smoking. Welcome to both the hobby and TPL.
@jfreedy Took your advice. Smoking McClelland TQ Gold and Toasted with about 25% Carter Hall. Far less tongue bite and still sweet and flavorful. Thanks for the tip!
Newminster 400 Superior Navy Flake in a Meerschaum Churchwarden. Trying the folded slice method, smoked well till near the the end. I'll try it again in a different pipe next.
Smoking some East India Trading Company "Officer's Club". Got a real shock tonight when I was scanning through Pipes & Cigars website with intention of picking up another three or four tins of the stuff for Christmas when I discovered it was listed as 'Out Of Stock'. Now that's a bad sign. Usually if something is listed as 'Back Ordered' they plan on restocking it. But 'Out Of Stock' is like the death knell. It seems to be out of stock everywhere else as well. And those places are three dollars more than P&C's price. "Oh the humanity!"
We've actually have had cooler weather in SE Louisiana for the past 5 or 6 days, I've been smoking Senior Chief and Lighthouse Keepers (blends made for me by The Country Squire), G.L. Pease Six Pence, MacBaren's Cherry Ambrosia and I just opened a tin of H&H Egg Nog.
