Started the morning with Dunhill Elizabethan Mixture and now enjoying my first bowl of Samuel Gawith Squadron Leader from a tin I purchased recently. Both enjoyed in my new Savinelli Roma 606 (KS).
Just finished a bowl of Panama Jack Key Lime in an old Dr. Grabow Royal Duke. It sure didn't live up to my expectations of what a tobacco called Key Lime should taste like. I could get a slight scent from the tin note ... but that's about it. Neither the taste or room note warranted a name like Key Lime. It's my first experience with the Panama Jack brand - and was the one blend with the best over all rating from reviewers. I could barely detect much of a citrus flavor what-so-ever. During a retro-hale I got a hint of lime on an occasion or two - but nothing of any consistency. The room note was not unpleasant - but neither did it offer any suggestion of Key Lime. It was a nice smooth, bite free smoke - just not something worthy of calling Key Lime - neither sweet nor tart. I'm going to try this blend again tonight in a Meerschaum and see if I get anymore out of the blend. The Dr. Grabow is old and has had many blends smoked in it over the years so I might not be the best pipe to base my judgment on. A Meerschaum or cob might be the best way to go on a citrus blend.
Gave Panama Jack Key Lime a second try - this time with the Meerschaum and the results were the same. Nice smoking tobacco, no bite, tiny bit of Key Lime smell in the tin, but that's about the extent of it. Don't think I'll buy another tin when I've smoked this one up.
@judandhispipe, I just saw a tin of Red Ribbon go for over $100 a week or two ago. It is some tasty stuff, but I'm not sure if it is that tasty. Things are getting really competitive lately.
@xDutchx,I saw tins of the 1983 crop on sale for $50 at the Chicago show two years ago. I will bet that's what you saw. You can still buy tins of the current (2008) crop for a lot less than that. Right now I am firing up a bowl of HH VS in my Irish Second prince.
@judandhispipe, yep it was the 83 crop, ribbon cut, and in the neighborhood of 20 years age. That is the most I have seen a tin of RR go for up to this point.
It felt "Springy" yesterday so I opened a jar of Briarworks Peach Cobbler I bought last summer. Took the wife to a large outdoor flea market/trade days event yesterday and smoked it while walking around with her. Even had a couple of people say how good it smelled.
This morning? Nothing. I have work I have to start in a few minutes.
Yesterday I was devoid of stereotypes.
I sat on the patio smoking Danish Mixture in an Italian pipe while listening to a baseball game, drinking white wine and slow barbecuing pork spare ribs, sausage and shrimp.

"McCranies Red Flake"
Lovely stuff, the McCranie's. I've still got 2 tins of the 96 crop of Red Ribbon waiting for me.
