So in order to get the grain to pop you use a dark stain and sand it off and then go back over it with a lighter stain, is that correct?

@Darmon yes. Sometimes I will use 3 to 4 different stains to get the desired look.

It is but I do understand having a cap on what you will spend on a pipe as well.
