As a boy sprout er scout, I loved Boys Life. Couldn't even pronounce "pedophilia", I thought it was how a toddler said "Philadelphia". Of course, my only pipe back then blew bubbles, but I kind of miss those days.
One of the things I like about watching shows on BBC or Acorn TV on Amazon Prime is that they actually show people smoking pipes and cigars. Just started the 2015 version of Agatha Christie's Partners-in-Crime which is set in the 1950s and there are a number of pipe smoking scenes and references.
@RockyMountainBriar I downloaded and enlarged the photo you posted. It's hard to tell on a couple of the pipes, but six of them looked to be bent pipes. Two on the top row were definitely churchwardens or long stemmed pipes. If you look at the enlarged photo you can see where the shank has a curve to it.
The ones I didn't see a curve in the shank, I called straight - like the man in the center with the checked shirt and vest.
@RockyMountainBriar my boss is from the middle east. He calls hookas a "hubbley bubbly" and he insists that green apple hubbley bubbly tobbaco is the very best. 😁 I can niether confirm nor verify this claim.

I was going to say “salty”.
Hey, I’m a non-pedophile who read Boys Life, back in the day.
And even then I was not a pedophile......
Sounds about right, my dad was born in 1927, he said he started smoking when he was 12. He had lots of older siblings to start him out.

Very cool. The links work fine. Thank you for posting them.
Hooka in the car. Go big or go home. 🙂
Looks like 90% or more of the pipes were straight stemmed pipes again.

Ahh, I did not post a picture. Sorry I did not specify, but I was referring to the LIFE MAGAZINE video montage that @opipeman posted.
Sorry. I thought you were referring to the photo that I now see @thebadgerpiper posted.
Can’t say I have any experience with them either, no matter the burnable.
I think I recognize that character. Is she from the old Little Abner newspaper cartoon of the 40's and 50's?
I was wondering how many of us are old enough to recognize the matriarch of the Yokum family.....
Some people believe that Mammy Yokum is the reason Popeye decided on a life at sea.
