Found these 3 pipes at an estate sale this morning for a total of $20 bucks: A Darby bulldog A Tinderbox "Unique" A Jost bulldog (Jost = historical St. Louis value ) Anyway, I'll start working on them next week...
@KA9FFJ ”The Tinderbox”, like “Iwan Reis” and other big shops had pipes made for them by the big companies. I have looked at a whole lot of pipes, and that shape, along with the “Made In England” leads me to believe it was made by Charatan for the “Tinder Box”. It does not have the trademark Charatan’s Make DC (Double Comfort) bit for that reason....kind of a Charatan “second”.
@KA9FFJ I'm with @RockyMountainBriar, that Tinderbox definitely looks like a Charatan Make 483DC. Where I disagree is that it was kind of a Charatan "second".
The name brand pipes made for pipe shops are just pipes ordered by the shops and usually stamped with just the store names or logo. Sometimes, the manufacturers logo is on the pipe also. I have a Savinelli that was carved for Bayou Tobacco in Baton Rouge that is stamped "Bayou Tobacco" and has the Savinelli logo. I also have a Peterson's Kapp-Royal made for sale by Iwan Ries. It has the Peterson stamping on the briar and IRC stamped on the stem.
Tnx for the inputs and info @RockyMountainBriar@PappyJoe MUCH appreciated. Went back for 1/2 price day to the same estate sale. Found a drawer with pipes they had forgotten. Here's what I bought for $30 bucks: LEFT COLUMN: THIN BITE PRIOR Deluxe - France BELGIUM #86 = meer lined GREENWICH
RIGHT COLUMN: BREWSTER - Italy KIKO #35 leather-Tanganyika LONCHAMP leather-France Meer Rhodesian A1
Haven't done any research yet concerning these pipes, but I hope to have fun bringing them back to life...
@PappyJoe Notice, once again, I wrote (kind of a Charatan “second”), second being in quotes. I did not imply they are somehow less of a pipe, only that they are not “truly” (notice the quotes) Charatan’s Make. The DC bit is a Charatan’s Make trademark and a reason the Tinderbox Unique was not cut with a DC bit when made and stamped for The Tinderbox. Just my explanation on what I consider (a sort of “second”).
Corrections: Upon closer inspection, I found that the DARBY is actually a DIGBY. And lastly, the meer Rhodesian, under a magnifier, looks like A.I. (the only marking, located on the bottom side of the shank) But I'm not positive about that one. Probably confirm once I give it a cleaning... Still, my 11 pipes will have cost me about $4.50 each, so you don't see me complaining...😁
@KA9FFJ; I have had Kiko and Longchamp leather covered pipes in the past and have found them to be poor smokers(hot). Savinelli leather covered have been the best smokers for me. I'd love to hear your expert analysis. At $4.50 each you can put up with a bad smoker. I paid more for mine.
I was fortunate enough to come across two pipes that were worth buying while antiquing. The first one is a Killarney Natural Peterson 268, which is a fantastic Zulu.
The second one I’ll need some help in identifying. It says “GER” on one side, and a name on the other, but the script has faded, other than the shape number and the word CO.
@thebadgerpiper I love that Pete Zulu, one of my favorite shapes. It should shine up nicely.
I found and Iwan Ries 1009S with the same shape, it looks like maybe a Savinelli shape although the stamping doesn’t attest to that. You might be able to see the full name if you can remove the repair band with a little heat? The Ger might be Gen? It kinda looks like Genode script “G”.
@RockyMountainBriar Ah, it makes sense that its a repair band. I was kinda hoping it wasn't, but it's still a good looking pipe (other than needing some cleaning). I'll see if I can get the band to budge when I have some time.
@thebadgerpiper I’m pretty sure I can see the shank crack on the right side inline with the top of the stamping, it’s looks to be pretty substantial, be careful removing the band.
I figured out what pipe I have. I followed both suggestions from @RockyMountainBriar and @KA9FFJ and did some digging. Turns out Rocky had the right idea, and I didn’t even need to remove the band.
The pipe IS an Iwan Ries stamped pipe. The lettering is faded by the shape number, but the CO at the end was enough to settle that part. That’s not surprising either, due to my proximity to Chicago. After looking at what brands Iwan Ries worked with, I found out it was Genod. The lettering matches up online with the pipe.
Thank you all for your help in solving this puzzle. I hope to have both cleaned up by the end of the week.

I’m pretty sure that Tinder Box is a Charatan’s Make and I think shape #483👍🏻
Thanks for the tip. Here is the ONLY stamping found on the pipe... no #s, etc...

Check out Calebrest pipes made in Italy.
The stamping looks a lot like two that I have:

Jost pipe shop closed in 1983, so these blends have to be at LEAST 37 years old!
Nice looking apple dead center!
Is there any stamping on the one with the replacement stem you made?
Mastersen - made in France
Nice looking pipe. Looks like a clone of a Savinelli Nonpareil, maybe even better.
