High proof to me is 100 proof or better, which is still only 50% alcohol. I still prefer Everclear @ 190 proof....stronger is better....right. Just be careful and keep it off the finish....unless of course you want to remove it🙂
Everclear 190 proof will do the trick. So will 100 proof. So will 91% Isopropyl, just make sure you let it dry, because its poisonous until it evaporates.
The higher the alcohol content, the faster it will melt stem and stummel crap. It depends on what you have at hand.
I just got in from 4 lacross games (in the rain and gnats like I have never seen them) for my 4 younger grandsons, then 2 high school tournament baseball games for my oldest grandson. So it was a busy and hectic travelling day to say the least. However, the pipe gods smiled on me. When I got home (after 9 hours), there was my Bones Pipe sitting on the counter. It came from California in 2 1/2 days to New Jersey.
I decided I wanted one of these for awhile now, specifically the "Fat Author". Being a bit of a minimalist both professionally and personally this little guy caught my eye. It had been out of stock for awhile. The unfinished pipe just screams simplicity and provides a sense of consumer satisfaction. The last two years I have only picked up 2 new pipes, a Savinelli and a Rossi of the same shape and really like them. AND, $39 is a whole bunch better than just over $100, especially these days for me. From what I have read, the stummel could very well be from the aforementioned pipe factories. There are nicks and blemishes on the bowl, but that is what this pipe is about.....no harm no foul. They have from what I read a great policy of standing behind their products.
So although I have yet to fill and smoke this guy, the comments that I read online makes me look forward to the first experience. I now have to think about the tobacco selection for the christening. I look forward to the carbonizing of the bowl interior and the darkening of the outside bowl surface.....I guess like a "poor mans" meershaum?
Just a large shoutout to the Morgan Company for such quick and fantastic service.
@motie2 I just wrote a post about having a slight case of tongue bite ... but can you imagine what the mouth of the smoker would have been like had they smoked an entire bowl of tobacco from that massive antique Elk & Dog pipe? I doubt that I have enough lung capacity to lite up the thing. Probably pass out from hyperventilating
@motie2 I'd hate to think I had to clench that pipe between my teeth for more than a minute! I think "rocking chair pipe" would be in order for that one... What a chunk of briar!
The Yeti, (Micah Cryder) a fellow Montanan, carves those pipes right here in Billings, Montana. He use to be in Missoula, Montana a few hundred miles away, but recently relocated to Billings (last I heard). I have not met him however...yet 🙂
I like several pipes carved by Alex Kappeler (I wish I had one 🙂). Not crazy weird, just some cool shapes, mostly normal and nice stem/shank adornments/extensions. He is very skilled at matching the pipe shape to the briar grain orientation, a true craftsman.
@motie2 One has to wonder if the mechanics of that pipe is set up like Gen. McArther's famous corn cob. That is, at least the bottom 1/3 of the "bowl" was solid... not bored... just for show... 🤔

WOW, massive is right.....unless that person has a really small hand like “Deadpool”😜
What? Have I been naughty again?
