Here's something that may be old hat to most, but I thought I'd throw it out there anyway. I have this pipe I acquired a few years back at the St. Louis pipe show. It's a T. Cristiano Metamorfosi. As a matter of fact, I just used it yesterday. It is well made with good mechanics, but there is a good reason it is called a Metamorfosi. First, here's the pipe:
But here's where the "Metamorfosi" comes in. It came with a small removable attachment that turns it into a non filtered pipe... Just thought I'd show it for anyone out there that might be unaware...
@KA9FFJ, @RockyMountainBriar; As you both know, my savinellis have this option. I use the attachment in all of them. I use the balsa filters in all of my Dr. Grabows that will accommodate filters. For me, they all smoke the best with this approach.
For 6mm at least, I like the balsa, if I use a filter. I have never tried a 6mm carbon filter, but since 9mm carbon filters zap the flavor so much, I would surmise the same would be true for the 6mm.
I beg to differ, I have an extremely sensitive pallet and I have smoked many of the blends I prefer ( Balkans, Englishes, Vaburs, straight virginias, straight burleys etc... in both 9mm carbon filters and without.
I personally have not found that carbon filters reduce the flavor, what I have found is that they eliminate tongue bite and gurgling pipes.
@mfresa The bottom one? If so, the description says “pickaxe”, but I think “elephant’s foot”, or maybe “shield” would work. I haven’t quite figured out the nuances between them🤔
@RockyMountainBriar, yes the bottom one. I think the vertical length is the only difference. Look up Walt Cannoy's elephant foot. Fantastic piece, that. anyway, it's the shape that counts.

I wondered how those pipes “morphed ”🤔
